i I STAKE FOR .R. F. CARMAN. J Ella Bryson Scores by Narrow Margin in Canvas Back Selling: Handicap at Laurel. Baltimore, Md., October 13. Two thrilling finishes stood out as the features of the racing at Laurel Park this afternoon and they came in the principal events of the day, the Canvas Back Selling Handicap for all ages, at six furlongs, and the handicap for three-year-olds and upward, at a mile: ami an eighth. In the stake were twelve starters and hardly one of the dozen was neglected by the big crowd of race-goers. The result was a victory for a Held" horse, K. F. Carmans Ella Bryson. which received considerable supinirt. There was a long delay at the post, caused principally by Tranids, fractiousncss. Eila Bryson was quickest to get into her stride and she cut out the pace, with Briar Patli in close attendance to the turn for home, where there was a general closing up. In the last furlong half a dozen were bunched and it appeared to be anybodys race, but "Ella Bryson lasted just long enough to get the verdict by a nose from Briar Path. Tranid came with a tremendous rush right at the end and was running fastest of all. Jockey J. Butwell, who rode for Ral Parr and AVilliam Garth during the past season will winter at Jacksonville. He will leave for Florida at the conclusion of the Havre de Grace meeting. Butwell will probably ride for Andrew Miller and the Oneck Stable next season. W. C. Westmoreland has purchased Frills and Faithful from C. Reed and will ship them to Columbia, S. C. He will race them at the southern fairs until the Opening of the Charleston meeting. The condition liooks of the stakes to be run at the meeting of the Cubau-Aiuericau Jockey Club at its new course at Oriental Park, Havana, Cuba, which is scheduled, to Uegin January 7, were distributed among the horsemen at Laurel this afternoon. There are twenty "stakes, worth from ,500 to 5,000. It is announced Hint the smallest purse will be 00. All allowance race purses will be 00 and overnight handicaps 1914.sh00 in value. The feed store and kitchen privileges have been eliminated by the club. The list of ollicials will be announced shortly. Willie Hopkins, who returned from France a few months ago, is gathering together a stable to race at the winter meetings. His lirst purchase was the two-year-old filly Mabel Montgomery, .- which he secured from James Fitzsinimohs today. Jockeys Grand and Dreyer were among the arrivals at Laurel this afternoon. Grand. vyHl ride both on the fiat and througlithe field. Edward McBride was an arrival from Louisville. He reports the purchase of a yearling by Cunard Melton Mdwbray. "brother to Clubs, from E. It. Bradley, tor which he paid ,500. Steeplechase jockey Willie Allen announced his retirement for the season. Allen led the jumping riders this seasoa with fifteen whining mounts. He won witli his last mount, Shannon River. Former Senator Bailey of Texas, was a visitor at Laurel and starter James Milton chaperoned him about the course during the afternoon. Mr. Milton, by the way, is also a native of the Lone Star state.
