FAMOUS STEEPLECHASER IS DEAD. Jerry M. has not long survived the death of his owner. Sir C. Assheton Smith. The horse was found at Robert Gores stable at Findon. October 12, with a broken leg and was destroyed. Jerry M. originally ran in Ireland, and as a four-year-old won his first two races both at Clonmel, in the colors of Mr. John Widger. In the following season he won six of the seven events which he contested, including the New Century Steeplechase at Hurst Park, carrying Sir Assheton Smiths livery for the first time. He followed up that success by taking the Stanley Steeplechase at Liverpool, and later won the Becher Steeplechase at Livoriiool and the Richmond Steeplechase at Kompton. When a six-year-old Jerry M. was unplaced in the Lancashire Handicap Steeplechase, won by Moonstruck, and did not appear again until Liverpool Autumn, when he defeated Axle Pin and others for the Valentine Steeplechase, but when odds of 20 to 1 were beE on him to beat The Pilot for the Open Steeplechase, at Newbury, he fell. At Sandown in the following season Jerry M. won the Liverpool Trial Steeplechase, easily beating Moonstruck, though he only suceeeded in following Jenkinstown home in the Grand National, starting favorite in a field of twenty-five. This race closed his career for that particular season, in fact, two years elapsed before he appeared again in public, and then at Hurst Park the son of Walnisgate captured the Open Steeplechase from Bloodstone. His only other outing was when he helped- to make history and credited Sir C. Assheton Smith with the Grand National, beating Bloodstone, Axle Pin, Carsey and others. Rath-nally was joint favorite with Jerry M.. but failed to complete the course. From one cause or another Jerry M. did not run again, so that he concluded his turf career amidst a burst of cheering which few horses are destined to hear.
