FILLIES IN THE CESAREWITCH. Princess Dorrie and Arda were heavily hacked favorites for this years Cesarewitch and both were beaten. In this connection London Sportsman said of the fortunes of other fillies in this historic long distance race: "No three-year-old filly has won a Cesarewitch since IS!!!!, when Mr. Tom Jennings Cvpria SO rounds, starting at to 1, ran a dead-heat with the favorite. Red Lyes, and the stakes were divided. Prior to that eight fillies of that age had carried off the race, but mostly with very light weights. Legerdemain, for example, the winner in 1S40. carried only 77 pounds. She had been covered that spring, and slipped twins after her victory. Artless, which ran a dead-heat with Gaspard in 1850. and in the run off scored by three lengths, had the still lighter burden of 73 pounds, or, at all events, carried that weight, which included a pound extra. Of the other victorious fillies. Wits End in 1S4 won with SO pounds, ami Dulcibella, in 1S00, with 05 pounds. Dulcibella was owned and trained by Mr. William Day, who was also the trainer of Weatherbound, winner of that seasons Cambridgeshire for Fred Swindell. Nine years later another three-year-old filly in Cherie scored under 77 pounds. Only two tillies altogether of her age have carried more than OS iiotinds to victory, the one being Plaisanterie, whose weight in 1SS5 was 100 pounds, and the other Corisande, which in Baron Rothschilds great turf season of 1S71 scored under 110 pounds, or three pounds more than the weight allotted to Princess Dorrie. Corisande had run unplaced to her stable companion, Hannah, in lioth the classic races which Princess Dorrie has this season won. but she subsequently secured the Coronation Stakes at Ascot"
