LATOMA TRACK DRIES OUT I MUD RUNNERS FAIL TO GET CHANCE PREVIOUS DAYS DRENCHING PROMISED. Races Are Decided on a Course That Is Only a Trifle Dull Unwieldly Fields Produce Much Crowd- j ing and Results Are Affected. r r Cincinnati. 0., October 27. Improved weather f brought with it an increase in patronage at La- t tonia this afternoon. The track showed little trace of yesterdays drenching beyond being a trifle dull. , The sport was keen and exhilarating. Big fields in ; most of the races contributed towards many up- t sels, there being much unavoidable crowding in ; which some of the best backed contenders were sufferers. Secretary Maglnns intention when fram-ing todays program wad to give the iworer grade , of horses an opportunity to win. Five of the dashes were with selling conditions and the other was a dash for maiden juvenile fillies. Two of the . races were attended by runups, but the bidder in each Instance failed to get the horse. The best field of the day contested the fourth 1 race, a six-furlong dash, Lackrose, paying extremely well, was returned the winner, after enjoying a 1 clear course and showing the most speed all the wav .Stout Heart, a newcomer that raced creditably on Canadian courses, ran a good race and lauded second, in advance of Colle. The favorite, bob Henslev, had a rough trip, as did Thesieres. The latter with a clear course would have been a strong factor. Sosius, a stable companion to Bob Hensley, was given the call in the fifth, but lie wonnd up the whlpper in, largely because of repeated crowding, for which jockey Keogh, astride Allan Oold, wa.t held to blame and received a live-day suspension by the stewards. .Mockery turned up the winner in a hard drive with Lady Krrant. The last-named showed a vastly improved performance over her last out. The colors of Clay Bros, were seen in front for the lirst time during the meeting when Fidget graduated from the maiden class by beating Water Witch in the opener. Fidget; was the favorite and well supported. The talent followed up their initial victory by selecting Mary Ann K. as most likely to take the purse in the second. This she did in handy style I after a bad swerve in the last furlong when about I to go into the lead. After the finish .1. S. Alex Labolds Christie proved best of a fair band of youngsters starting in the third, and the closing dash developed into a spirited duel between Joe Stein and Woyanoke, the former drawing out in the last twenty yards to win by a neck. Bonnie Eloise, the favorite, was caught in a jam soon after the start, which cost her a lot of ground and the race, for she closed an immense gap and finished third. Mockery was bid up from an entered price of .00 to ,100 by .1. Cudda, but was retaiued with an advance bid of . There were many new visitors today from Lexington, including Garrett D. Wilson, secretary of the Kentucky Association and Jesse Slmff. ieneral Manager John Ilaehineister announced this afternoon that he would offer seven races on each of the remaining Saturdays. On these days Iho post time for the opening dash will be 1:30 p. in., so as to avoid racing in darkness. The extra races will be advance fund selling purses and the conditions will be made known by Secretary Maginn in ample time. Mr. ilaehineister is also desirous of bringing to gether the best juveniles in training here and has earded a race at one mile, to be known as the Queen Citv Handicap, for which he will offer a purse of ,200. The race is to be featured Nov. 4. which will also be ladies day. On that day ladies who are accompanied by an escort will be admitted free. This ladies day feature, which was inaugurated last spring, is to be an event of each meeting. Several owners have expressed a desire to participate in the special race and it is expected that the starters will include Chalmers, Ed Crump. 1if Jr., Solly and others. Frank Oeriug, Jr.. bought from W. II. Pearce today the horse, Jeorge Stoll, which Pearce took out of a selling race recently. Fidget and Marv Ann K., winners of the two horse combination, yielded S7..r0 for .. The lield backers each received .35 in the three-horse combination. Joseph A. Murphv sent J. B. Campbell word today that he would arrive here next Thursday and discuss with horsemen winter racing prospects in the Crescent City. ,, G. W. J. Bissell has applied to Frank J.
