The repeated failures of favorites spelt disaster for the regulars at Latonia this aftoruoon and enabled the backers of long shots to reap a harvest. Not a single choices managed to score and some even failed of placing. The upsets came in swift succession, the outstanding one of the afternoon developing in the second race, when Miss Kruter won with odds of 54.S0 against her straight for each investment and the greater sum of 05 for place. Tlie last-named sum is the largest paid for place against a winner on a Kentucky track in a considerable time. The filly was bv no means neglected and some of the Canadian half-mile contingent profited well by her success. Charlie Ellison and John B. McLaughlin were joint holders of the only 25 ticket sold on her. It yielded ,935. The conditions of the first three races, the starters all to be sold for 00 each, brought out large fields of mediocre horses. Jester was highly regarded In the opener, but Long Reach, grouped with Santo and Irish General in the field, led for the entire trip and won by a leflgth, Jester just getting up in the last stride to overhaul Prince Albert for second place. On the strength of her good showing yesterday, Coy was liked best for the second, but after flattering her backers to the last turn, she succumbed readily to Mis Kruter aud Birka. Water Witch and Brick and Mortar were given the call in the third, but Water Witch got away poorly, while Brick and Mortar was nearly thrown when in a contending position. Cannonade won handily over Nobleman, with White Crown iu third place, ller-in ml a and Howdy Howdy were the choices for tho fourth, but both failed to get any portion of the purse, the winner turning up iu La Mode, which was in a running mood today and leading for the entire trip, ultimately beat Flying Feet by a narrow margin. " Indolence showed an acrobatic performance when he won the fifth race in rather handy fashion. In a previous start, he was beaten oft and finished ! distant trailer, without showing a particle of speed. In todays running he was well up most of the way, and drew out in the stretch. The favorite. First Degree, under hard urging, just managed to beat Little Bean for second money. After havlug run five times second in six starts. Bonne Chance managed to move up a notch and win the closing dash, for which Joe Deibold was the choice. Neylou gave him an energetic ride and kept him well up to the stretch turn, where he passed Bonanza. The latter, at long Odds, held Olga Star safe in the final drive for second place. The field backers took both pools of the combination. The two-horse yielded S.70 for and the three-horse .95. William A. Nortbey. secretary and treasurer of the Blue Bonnets track at Montreal, was a visitor this afternoon, coming from Laurel. He is here to observe the workings of the mutuels and secure pointers which he intends for use at the Blue Bonnets track, where the inutuel system will be installed during the winter for use next season. Eighteen machines will be used at Blue Bonnets. Representatives of all the Kentucky tracks have notified General Manager Hachmeister of their acceptance of the invitation to bo his guests on Friday, November 0, when they will discuss and prob-abiv reach an agreement on dates for next season. If "a decision on the dates is reached they will be submitted to the Racing Commission for ratification at their meeting to be held at Latonia, Nov. 7. Frank J. Bruen received advices today from Fred Auerbach that he would arrive here from Charleston on Tuesday next. He also stated that the work of Improving the plant is well under way and that everything will be in good shape for the opening. The track proper is in excellent condition and has been kept in constant order since the close last spring. Louis Tauber will take five of J. W. Schorrs horses and three of his own to the Charleston course to race. Eugene Elrod, wlio Is looking after the Juarez stake entries, reported today that owners intending to race at the Mexican course have been liberal with their nominations, and he has received a big batch of entries. Former jockev Herman Radtke, who ranked with the foremost riders in the country not so long ago, was a visitor today from Chicago, where he Is at present in charge of a big billiard parlor. Col. W. E. Applegate left today for Laurel, where he will confer with Matt J. Winn regarding Juarez racing prospects. Col. Applegate will likely have a large voice in the ring management at the Mexican course the coming winter. Charles F. Grainger will arrive from Louisville tomorrow to enjoy the racing for a few days. C. F. Buschenieyer was among todays visitors. He stated that his good sprinter Hawthorn, will go into winter retirement in a few days.
