COLTOH HORSES IN FORM OHAGAN AND BIG DIPPER SCORE DOUBLE FOR ILLINOIS OWNER. Weather Remains Unfavorable, but Sport at Pal-motto Park Is Surprisingly Well Patronized Attempted Coup on Verona Goes Wrong. Charleston, S. C, December 4. Weather condit-tions tuday were again unfavorable for the sport at Palmetto- Park and It was somewhat surprising that a crowd of goodly proportions ventured out. There was n conspicuous absence of quality in most of the races but some of the lields engaged evenly matched contestants and resulted in interesting rac-iug. The M. A. Col ton stable and jockey C. Turner starred during the afternoon by scoring a double. OHagan and Big Dipper being the two to account for the stables success. Both were outstanding favorites, received confident support and won commauI-ingly. A supposed "good thing" was howled over when Verena succumbed by a head to High Class, owued by Herman Brandt, and sent here In charge of the old-time jockey, .Tames Coffey. Verena was regarded with high favor and might have won but for Pools over-confident handling of the gelding. High Class was backed from 12 to 1 to 7 to 1. and his success cost the ring a pretty penny. Daddy Oip and Ruisseau fell on the stretch turn in the third race and the former sustained injuries Which necessitated his being destroyed. Silas Grump and Eleven Pence, both recent arrivals from Havre de Grace, died yesterday as a result of fever contracted while Ijeing shipped here. Eugene Lutz was a visitor this afternoon. He stated that he had sent .Messenger -Boy to William Garths farm, where the horse will do stud duty for the next three years. Jockey F. Moore was fined 5 by the stewards for rough riding and for a similar offense jockey Pool was fined .". Todays arrivals included .Inle Garson and Al Knenlgsborg. Both came from Baltimore. Jockey McCabey departed tonight for Philadelphia, where he will remain until after the holidays. Later on he will begin riding at one of the winter tracks. . Tlockey ITT Wolfe has signed to ride .for the J. HoganH stable during the rest of the meeting. W. Carroll arrived by boat from Baltimore witli Cntito and The Palms. j. it. Paul has fired and blistered the mare Camellia and she will be vested until next spring. Camellia was troubled with bad ankles.
