MARYLAND RACING MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER JL. . ; 4, Racing in the state of Maryland has been steadily growing in importance during the past few years and the season of 1914, which was brought to a successful close at Havre de Grace last Monday, was ho exception to the rule. Tile building of a new track at Bowie, which seems destined to take rank with the other important courses at Fimlico, Laurel and Havre de Grace, and the installation of the pari-mutuel system of betting in llou of the Ixjokmakers at Laurel, were the extraordinary happenings of the year. From the standpoint of distribution in prize, money, which is the most significant of tests, it was Marylands best season. The distribution for the year amounted to 13,990, as against 55,C90 in 1913, and lesser amounts in each ot .the preceding years for which figures have been kept. In 1909, the first year for-which complete figures were compiled by Daily Racing Form, the distribution amounted to but 29,705. The gains made by Maryland racing in the six years covered in the tables must be counted as nothing short of remarkable. Maryland racing, as now conducted, compares favorably in quality with that provided anywhere else la America. This is in part due to .the convenient arrangement of its racing schedules. Fitting, in as they do with dates on the New York tracks; the natural result is that the stables engaged on the metropolitan course of New York state makeMaryland the scene of their operations in the spring and fall. The general results of the Maryland racing season are summarized in the subjoined tabulation: 5 X i? 3 : 5 SJ O 3 3 r o- a? c-S. n OS f -b S3 S3 s. 5?, c 2 Bs c5 ;V. 3? 3 Is- 9" g, Track and Meeting." - - S" gg If p.2 w Ew w, a p- S5 S :?
