THAT BRITISH COLUMBIA DECISION. The conviction of the British Columbia Thoroughbred Association on the charge of having racing with betting on an unauthorized day means the end of the Unlimited periods during which it was carried on at Vancouver for the past three yours. Tli.i legal period for race meetings in Canada Is seven days, a limitation that no club outside of British Columbia lias attempted to evade, but in that province meetings have beeii held running to sixtv, eighty and ninety days. The Assize Court sustained the charge that every day beyond the seven wps illegal, no matter If there was1 no bookmnklng. but only pari-mutuel speculation. In passing sentence Mr. Justice Morrison said: "In ibis case I iitl 1 derstand that the only object of the Crown in bringing the case was to secure a verdict that m would protect the public. It Is not needed to glvH the extreme limit of a Tine. The effect will be tn same If the fine Is one dollar or a thousand dot- lars lis far as the matter is of imiortaiiee to the public at large. The fine in this case will be live hundred dollars." I
