ENGLANDS RICHEST RACE THIS YEAR. The Jockey Club Stakes, run at Newmarket Sep-teiulier ."Ml and won bv Laniiis. was of the net value of 7,200 and the richest stake race of 1915 iu England. Couceruiug it Ijoudou Sporting Life of the ncxl day said: "Apart from the Eclipse Stakes, which has been an uiiqualiticd success fr..m its inception, it is doubtful whether the various ten thousand pound races have proved the attractions anticipated. The Princess of Wales Stakes, which was instituted in the same year as the Jockey Club Stakes, has during later years lieen considerably reduced in value, but the latter event remains one of the two most valuable prizes to 1m- won during the season. This Jockey Club Stakes, which st..od out on yesterdays card, has at times produced good contests and fallen to faui.-us horses, but at otbers the race has lieen chiefly distinguished by its value. ••Among tin- greatest of the winners associated with it was the first. This was Captain "Harry" Met almoin* celebrity. Isinglass, which had previously annexed tlw two other "ten thousand plunders. Among the op|ioneiits of the son of Isonoiny was the St. Leger winner of the vear. Throstle, which pre forred licit ing to racing, and Isinglass was left with an easy task to dispose of the remainder. La-veno. which won a Mar later, was merely a useful ]M-rforuier but the next on the list was the late King Edwards first Derbv winner. Persimmon, which easily defeated the El som hero of the previous vear. Sir Yisto "Low Wisely, which heat Lord Roscltcrys pair. Velasquez an. I Chelandrv. the following year, was Well aliove the average in point of merit, while his inline. Hat.- successor. Cyllene. was unquestionably the liest three year ol.l oT the year in which Jed-da h scored a surprise win in the Derby. Cyllene was followed bv another champion in Flying Fox: but Disguise. Pieiermaritzlnirg and Rising Class were of somewhat inferior quality. Then we come to that spbn.ii.i filly. Sceptre, which made a hack of the odds on favorite. Hock Sand. Sir Janes Mil lers triple-crown winner, however, compensated his owner by taking the prize a twelvemonth later. Winn there was no Sceptre iu the field. Jn more recent years the most famous winners have Included Lefuherg. Ktedfa-t and Prince Palatine. Cantilever was likewise a pretty good colt when he upset the Hlds laid on Tracery two years ago. following this up bv carrying off the Cambridgeshire. ""There was not Inn- in yesterdays field with the slightest claim to challenge comparison with the l.est of those referred to above. The pick of the basket, so far as looks went, in the opiuioo of the majority were l.anius and Gadabout. The Clare-haven trainer had paid a deal of attention to the former, which had been subjected to several long gallops with Snow Marten and other inmates of the stable, and that he had thriven on his work was apparent to the casual observer. Gadabout was also admired, but Rossemlale. which wore a dressing on his bocks, appeared somewhat big. Ijinius. as anticipated, was the chief fancy. Mr. Neumanns colt being supported down to 5 to 2. Those who preferred to look elsewhere generally chose between By George!, Rossemlale and Dame Prudeut. the last-named of which was expected by those immediately concerned to play a prominent part in the |ii-ih-cc dings, burdened as she was with but 105 IMiiuids. This she succeeded in doing, readily defeating all save the favorite, which raced clean away near Abingdon Bottom and passed the box three lengths ahead of his nearest pursuer. Gadabout lMing five lengths further in the rear, with Coiitiuo fourth. By George! ran well up to the Rushes, but last years winner, Trois Temps, did badly, finishing last. Mr. Neumann had previously won the race with Silieria. the dam of Snow Marten. •Laniiis is by Llangibby, which won the Eclipse Stakes some years ago, out of Mesange, and has ou seven! occasions displayed useful form. As a two-year-old he won three of his seven races, one of his triumphs being recorded in the Prince of Wales Nursery at Doncaster. Last year he ran six times and won the Sundown Foal Stakes from Hapsburg. Prior to yesterday he had run twice this year, finishing third to Diadumenos and Wrack in the Jubilee Stakes, and also third to Rossemlale and Black Jester in the Princess of Wales Stakes. He has engagements in both the Cesarewitch and Cambridgeshire, for each of which he has earned a ten pound lienalty. which increases his weight to 120 pounds for the Cesarewitch and lit* pounds for the shorter event. Gilpin, however, has other strings to his Imjw."
