MORE MOISTURE AT BOWIE HEAVY DOWNPOtJK SPOILS THE GOING AND CAUSES PLENTIFUL SCRATCHING. Water Lady Bests Sand Marsh in an Exciting Finish — Shrapnel Scores in Another Close Contest — Gossip of the Course. Baltimore. Md.. November lit. — Rain which fell e»l kmsly last night, made the going at Bowie this afternoon deep and heavy. This resulted iu numerous withdrawals in all but the o| eiiiug race, for which sixteen horses went to the |K «t. The Eclipse Handicap, which was offered as a feature, brought out a smart held and incidently furnished a splendid contest in which Water Lady caine from last place to beat Sand Marsh by a half length iu a driving finish. Sand Marsh showed the most speed in the going and led by a comfortable margin until in the last eighth, where he began to tire. Car-bid,, was another that tired in the race after showing s| eed. Walloon, one of the starters in the third race, a • lash of one mile for maidens, broke down badly during the running. He was coining fast when en K-ring the homestretch, where he showed in second place, only to quit suddenly. Forehand pulled him up and it was with sonic difficulty that he was led off the track. In the oi»on -r Hob Hi-dfield came from liehind t. l»eal Wayfarer by a scant length and in the secon 1 Shrapnel and Tan Handle fought it out through the last quarter. Shrapnel proved the gainer of the two and won by a neck. Molly ». Iieat a bad lot of maidens in the third dash at one mile. Jacklet led by a long margin on the back stretch and while rounding the far turn, but tired badlv in the final eighth. Next Wednesday there will lie a sale of horses in training, in the paddock. Iiefore the first race. Those that have already been named for the sale are: Nephthyw. Maifou. Mamie K.. Wayfarer. White Eye. Yodcles. Pay Streak. Iied Piper. Videts Brother. Jackonet. Banjo Jim and Sherlock Holmes. W. T. Anderson has decided to retire his string for the winter months and tlie horses will lie shipped from Beiming to Captain I*. M. Walkers farm at Boyce. Va. Mr. Andersou lost one horse in the Penning tire and the others were so badly injured that he does not hoi»e to race anything again this fall. J. W. Johnson, who recently purchased Luther and Itmli Strickland from H. G. Bedwell. will ship them t" Havana to race during the long whiter meeting liit ic. J. W. Hcdrick has sold the two-year-old Stellar-Jn.i to Godfrey Preece and his stallion Belainour to Sam Louis. It was rcjiorted that Double Five of the Hedriek string lierished iu the Benuiug lire, but the report was erroneous . J. J. Maekessey has left for Warrellton. Va.. iv*ore he will officiate as paddock judge for the I. nit meeting there tomorrow. George W. Gall will officiate as clerk of the scales in place of Herman P. Conkliug. whose duties at Bowie prevented his going. The starting will lie done by Frank J. Bryan.
