December IS. — There was a big • Saturday gathering at Oriental Park today ami speculation was brisk. Kentucky horses were conspicuously successful. Horses well backed at short •dds cut a wide swath in the days results. Envy ruled at odds on for the opening race, hut was beaten in a close finish by r.nver Bey and Quick. The former made the pace for most of the way. but was tiring at the end and barely outstayed the fast coming Quick. The latter would have won in anotlier stride. irotagoras, the favorite, won the second race in a drive with Merry Jubilee. Shadrach was installed first choice for the third, but was easily beaten by Sureget. the second choice. Shadrach showed soreness and Sureget had things pretty much his own way from start to finish. Lily Orme wa heavily backed to win the fourth race and went to the post second choice, but Pierrot t«M k her measure after she had raced into a lead of several lengths in the stretch. Mac, the favorite of the race, finished in last place. E. It. Parsons scared his second victory of the day when Stunner won the fiftli race in a hard drive with Smilax. Stunner was one of the outsiders of the race. The closing dasli resulted in the defeat ■ •f the odds-on choice Coppertown, by Muzanti. wbcli was by no means friendless in the betting. President Menocal of the Cuban republic and liienilMTs of his cabinet, will make up a party at the clubhouse tomorrow. Among the arrivals today were William B. lliiima and Joe Vita of the New York Sun staff. Jockey Young was suspended for twenty days for rough tiding on Jabot.
