. 1 : , • I I , i , . 1 : RESULTS OF THE DECEMBER SALES. Those who were most intimately concerned were surprised and gratified by the results of the Newmarket Dcccmlier sales. In the five days of the sales 497 berses were sold for an aggregate of S4.208 guineas, or 37, 880. and au average of slightly over 45. These were much better figures than were hoped for in advance and there is more cheerfulness in English broiling circles. No doubt the total and average would have swelled greatly if Col. W. Hall Walkers stud had been sold. But the government having finally accepted the offer of his stud as a gift to the nation, his many horses were withdrawn on the day prior to that set for their sale.
