I 1 BAKER IS LUCK AT LAST TAKES HIS FIRST RACE OF THE MEETING WITH BEULAH S. Dunga Din Wins the First Half Mile Dash of the. Year for Two-Year-Olds — Tijuana Owners Heading for Hot Springs. New Orieaus. La.. February 14. — After mane trials. R. L. Baker finally managed to win his first purse of the Fair Grounds meeting when Beulah S. galloped home in front of four others in the mile handicap that featured todays card. She led from barrier rise to finish and was the extreme outsider in the betting. Marion Goosby and Indolence divided the betting honors and the former landed in second place, while Indolence retired after going three-quarters. Cold weather again prevailed, but the attendan -e did not greatly suffer, for the spacious stand was well filled with s|M ctatnrs. Big fields were the rule in most instances and favorites were bowled over with regularity. Some of the contests Wtea interesting. Dunga Din took tin- first half mile dash of the meeting for two year -olds when he headed Nonesuch in the last few strides. Charles Cella was a visiter from St. Louis and will stay over for several days. Kmil Hen has sold Marshon to A. Weinart and Archie Zimmer will train him hereafter. Joseph E. Martin during the day received numerous requests from Tijuana horsemen for stable room at Hot Springs. The selling race rule relating to bidding on winners, recently passed by the Jockey Club, will be adopted here when it becomes effective in the cast. Representatives of the Mobile racing project, who came here yesterday with a view to interesting horsemen, did not meet with much success and it is doubtful now if their plans will be proceeded with. Broomsedge, winner of the fifth race, was bid up from 1916.sh00 to 1916.sh00 and was retained by G. Phillips at an advance of . The license of jockey R. Guy has been revoked, because he appeared on the grounds in an intoxicated condition. Jockey E. Ambrose was suspended for six days by the starter. Charles F. Grainger, president of the New Louisville Jockey Club and member of the Kentucky State Racing Commission, was an arrival from Louisville yesterday, accompanied by P. J. Hanlon. Mr. Grainger, in discussing racing prospects for this year in Kentucky, gave it as his opinion that it would be a banner year and that interest in Ihe coming Kentucky Derby is greater than formerly on account of the probable participation of many English-bred racers. While Mr. Grainger would not state positively that such would be the case, it is generally understood that the Kentucky State Racing Commission will meet about March 1 and apportion dates to the different associations in Kentucky. It is likely that there will be sixty-three days of racing next spring. Lexington. Churchill Downs and Douglas Park each to race thirteen days and Latonia to have twenty-four days of racing. There was some uneasiness today among turfncii here on account of the agitation against racing started by a number of local ministers. The license of jockey I.
