MUDDY TRACK AT OAKLAAYN RAIN VISITS THE HOT SPRINGS COURSE FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS MEETING. i Mars Cassidy Takes the Gus Strauss Handicap with Ease — Marie Miller an Easy First Again — Toddling Practically Left. Hot Springs. Ark., March 25. — For the first time hiring tin- present meeting mud racing was the order at Oaklawn today, following • iiard rain last night, lowering clouds which threatened another ill -luge did not deter another big crowd from journeying to the course. The racing was surprisingly keen and the finishes in most instances dose, hut upsets were freiiuent after the initial race. The worst jolt that the talent inal ill ill came With the running of the fifth race, the Jus Strauss Handicap, named in honor of the president of the Busin--ss Mens League. Dr. arnica was regarded as a good thing for this race, hat ho was beaten easily by Mars Cassidy. starting here for the first time and also by Gretawood. The race also introduced the Juarez and New Orleans stars, Lot tus and For Fair, both of which finished distant trailers and ran as if disliking the going. Mars Cassidy ran to his best form and. showing a decided aptitude for racing well on the soft track. led all the way and won in a canter. 11. S. Newmans good filly Marie Miller started the ball rolling auspicii.usly fur the backers of favorites by winning the opener. Palgce, because of his good showing in a previous start, was regarded with the most favor for the second, but Moiiton got him away badly and he was interfered with sharply, which resulted in his running far back all the way. Another favorite to get practically left at the post was Todilling. which started in the third race. Milton Pobh-e accounted for this purse by a scant head over I.udweiser. The latter might have made it three straight wins for Murphy had that rider not been a bit overconfident in the last sixteenth. Katina was another favorite that failed. Her defeat came in the fourth race, in which Povelry James. I nele Jinimic and Isaple were placed. Favorable reports continue to come from the bedside of jockey V. Gourley and the attending physicians now hold out high hopes that he will pull through. Jockeys O. Gentry and . Van Dusen, who sustained fractured collarbones when they fell, were at the track this afternoon. Following Vuchel Worths victory in the second race she was bid up from 00 to 1916.sh00 and bought by J. N. Mounce. There was added 00 to the regular purses of 00 for the third and sixth races. The increases came from the associations share of runup money. The extra 00 was split fifty, thirty and twenty percent, among the first three horses. Jockey T. Henry attempted to indulge in some rough riding tactics while astride Increase in the second race. He was let oil with a sharp caution by Judge Campbell, coupled with the warning that a repetition of his offense would mean a lengthy suspension. Jockey T. Hayes, recently suspended for rough riding, has had his suspension modified to terminate March 31. so as to enable him to ride at Howie, for which point lie departed in company with his father tonight. Secretary Joseph McLennan, of the Bowie track, telegraphed here today that racing at Powie would positively open as scheduled. April 1. rumors to the contrary notwithstanding. He likewise added that horsemen might be informed that the Maryland racing situation appeared highly favorable. After the last race Judge Campbell announced that Toddling would not be allowed to start here again. The program books for the last seven days of the meeting were distributed to owners this morning. There are four purses carded daily with 00 added to each. Training gallops this morning over a slow track were: Bonanza — Mile in 1:56%. Ciceron Half mile in 58. Columbia Jueen Halt mile in 50. Erin — Three-eighths in 13. Fairly Five eighths in 1 :ii!t. Herbert Temple -Mile in 2:05. Kilday— Mile in 1:55. Linbrook -Seven-eighths in 1:37. Miss Represent -Half mile in 58%. Meae Irvin — Five-eighths in 1:06. Old Hob Half mile in 57. Sol Oilsey — Half mile ia .".0. Tatiana — Five-eighths in 1:10.
