STRONG B00KMAKING ORGANIZATION QUITS. New York. March 25. The Metropolitan Turf As-sociation. familiarly known as tin- "Mete," and the strongest organization of bookmakers ever in existence in America is to be dissolved forthwith. The laws igslasl bookmaking took away the occupation i of the members of the nssociat ion some years ago. At one time there were Many million dollars rep resented iu tie- membership and the association i itself had in excess of 00,000 in its treasury. A resolution adopted at a meeting held yesterday adequately explains the reason for the dissolution. It nails: •■hereas, the amendment to Section MM ; of the penal law has so changed the laws of the • state that the laving of odds iu the manner that : was an ioiisly lawful and known as bookmaking, has become unlawful and has not been practiced I ■tens tlie adoption of the said amendment : and. whereas, this ; s..ui iatinn was formed at the time when SUCh laying of odds was lawful, now. therefore, be it resolved, that in tin- opinion of the members of the asportation, they deem it to be to the best interests .f the members that it be forthwith dissolved, ami it is further resohed that all proper ■tepa be taken to arrange for the dissolution." The Metropolitan Turf Asso.iat ion was twenty-one years old and at one time or another Included in its membership all of the important bookmakers who in former yean operated on the big tracks of the United States and Canada. It was the owner of considerable real property, in addition to a plethoric treasury. One of the most recent presidents was .Edward Burke, the ruling spirit of the Harford Agricultural and Mreeders Aseorlstioa. Which conducts racing at the Havre de Grace track in Maryland.
