Something like 29 horses wintered at the Cravesend track and their training has been retarded just as much as those :it Pelmont Park by the severity of climatic conditions. All are in a state of backwardness which will keep many of them from going to Maryland. Quite a number of the smaller lots were being primed for powie and Havre de Grace, but the last fortnight of decidedly unfavorable weather has prCTi nt.d their preparation. However, all the trainers have done what they could under the sheds and it is safe to say that when they get the opportunity to extend their charges they will be sent along rapidly, as all are in a healthy condition. .lack Golilsboroimh. who has Mr. Andrew Millers horses iu hand as well as others, has them as forward as possible. He has paid especial attention to Roamcr. which will lie ready for the Kentucky Handicap. It is aNo probable that the little champion will be seen in the Excelsior Handicap, which will mark the Opening of the Jamaica meeting. "Roamer never looked better than he does today." said Goldsborough. "He is ready to step along as soon as I can get him on the track. In fact, all my horses have done well lately and are ready for hard track work." .lames Fitzsimmons has a big string of thirty head, more than one-third being two-year-olds. They looked like a mighty likely lot as they walked around the sheds. "If w had had anything like decent weather." said Fitzsimmons, "I should surely been at Havre de Grace, but I think I can make Pimlico with some of the lot. I gave them plenty of shed work and it will not take the early comers long to get into racing trim as soon as I can get them on the track. Put look at all those purses that are getting away from me owing to this bad weather. There will 1m- a busy time around here as soon as Superintendent Prennan lets us on the track. Everybody will want to work at once, so anxious are we all to get a crack at the Maryland purses. I have a couple. Socony and Star Gaze, entered in stakes at Havre de Grace, but I doubt if they can 1m- gotten ready in time. I also expect to have some stake winners among the Quincy Stable youngsters, all of which are well engaged." One of the biggest stables at Cravesend is that in charge of George M. Odoni. He has twenty-two head, many of Which are two-year-olds. Odom did his best to be prepared for Havre de Grace, but the continuous bad weather has upset all his plans. It is improbable he will send a horse to the peat before Jamaica opens on May 18. Of his eighteen two-year-olds, seven are entered ill stakes, including Whitney Pelle. Sargon II.. Flot-son. Water Dame. Tomlinson. Ed Garrison and Tom McTaggart. It is therefore to be concluded these are the best of the bunch at this writing. Sprint, the good three-year-old of last year, has grown into a good-looking horse and is so promising that he will figure iu stake racing. Eddie Tap-1 in will do the riding for the stable anil reported for work a couple of days ago. fresh from Havana, where he enjoyed a successful season. In speaking of his short string of horses. Frank Regan said that Whimsy was in good shape and would be ready early. "Mine are not such a fashionable lot." remarked Regan, "but I am going to get the heat out of them that there may be in them, and some at least will win races. Like the reat of the trainers around here I shall have to await the Jamaica opening. I prefer to do this rather than rush my lot along for an early campaign. The bad winter we have had will help many of the minor stables this spring, as it will keep many a good horse from going to the races." John Whaton will send his old stand-by. Buskin, to the races again this year in good shape. "I think he is sounder than he has been for some time." said Mr. Whalen. "and I only hope he gets to the peat in some of those big handicaps in good J condition. Some horses may beat him. but there will also be many a one behind him at the finish. Poots is also a promising horse. Little Nearer will lie put over the jumps. He is a rare good fencer, if he can only carry the high weight and go a route. I should like to have gone to Maryland, but : my first racing will be at Jamaica."
