HAVRE DE GRACE OPENING GOOD ATTENDANCE AND RACING MARK THE FIRST DAY OF THE MEETING. Kewessa Captures the Harford Handicap in a Tight Finish with Flittergold — Dr. Nelson Runs Away from the Other Two-Year-Olds. Baltimore, Md., April 15. — The spring meeting at Havre de Grace was ushered in this afternoon under auspicious conditions. A well-balanced card of six races, featured by the Harford Handicap, with ,500 added, was provided for the occasion. In a stirring finish. W. L. Olivers Kewessa was returned the winner of the stake by the scantiest of margins over Flittergold. Superior horsemanship on the part of jockey McTaggart had much to do with the victory, as he clearly outrode Burlingame at the finish. McTagt . 1.545 l:0/if, A good -sized crowd was on hand to welcome the return of the sport at Havre de Grace, especially big delegations coming over from Philadelphia and Baltimore. The mutucl system of wagering was instituted and was well received by the public. Ample accommodations have been supplied for the eoiivenit nee of patrons of the inutuels. Students of form had a profitable day, the majority of the winners being confidently supported. Dr. Nelson made a runaway affair of the two-year-old dash and won by a wide margin. Some of tin- horses that Joseph E. Widener had in France are due to arrive in New York on the Korea of the Atlantic Transport line Monday. Thomas Welsh shipped the horses and he will leave on a later boat. It is probable that he will train such of them as are not turned over to J. Howard Lewis. A. C. Parretto is endeavoring to sell Reybourn to be raced at the hunt meetings. This son of Star Shoot is of galloway size. Philadelphia sent a big delegation to the races for the opening day. Among those seen in the crowd were Lafe Block, George C. Roesch, Gus Mille, Jack Fogarty, Morris Boney and Andrew Brant. Jockey W. Kelsay and the apprentice G. Lomas will ride for the McNaughton stable. The contract on jockey K. Weathersby has been transferred by George J. Day to A. R. Bresler. Tom Shaw was an arrival fom New York and others on hand for the opening were Gene Moyne, Steve LHommedieu and W. II. Timmons. Joseph McLennan was among the visitors.
