GEORGE SMITH QUALIFIES HUNS A SPLENDID RACE AT LEXINGTON, ALTHOUGH BEATEN IN A CLOSE FINISH. English-Bred Filly Triumphs in the Ashland Oaks in Which the Favorite, Lady Always, Is Beaten Off. I Lexington. Ky.. May 1. — While the Ashland Oaks, because of its monetary value was regarded as the foremost offering here today, uhe rare preceding it at one mile and a sixteenth, in which John Kan-fords Jeorge Smith made his debut as a three-year-old, overshadowed it in point of interest and furnished a most thrilling struggle. The Snnford representative, one of the choices for the Kentucky Derby, though beaten a scant head by Bayberry Candle, was not disgraced and his showing gained him a host of admirers, for it was the general opinion among close observers that the test was sufficiently good to warrant his being one of the favorites for the big Louisville event in which he will meet horses of his own age exclusively. Bay-berry Candle was in receipt of sixteen pounds from him and hud a slight advantage at the start which Itoseoe Goose, her rider, was not slow in making use of. George Smith challenged her in resolute style in the stretch and gained steadily, but under terrific urging she managed to last just long enough to get the verdict. The 1 :44% that the race was run in represented a new track record, the former mark of 1:48 having been held Jointly by Grover Hughes and Winning Witch. The Ashland Oaks was instituted in 1879 and run continuously to 1897, when it was discontinued; was renewed in 1912 and today was the twenty -third running of this popular filly stake, the condensed history of which, since 1890, is as follows: Year. Do-lina was second ami Deliver third. The last-named pair were grouped with others in the field und received surprising attention in a betting way. The odds -on favorite. Lady Always, was nowhere and ran a surprisingly bad race. Ideal weather prevailed and another generous crowd was in attendance. The racing was interesting and close, with most of the winners coming from the ranks of outsiders. Trainer W. J. Young, who has Bulse in charge, remarked after George Smiths performance today, "that was a crackerjack showing and he certainly looms up like a high-class colt, but Ill have to take a shot at him in the Derby to find out how really good he is." Trainer W. B. Jennings, who has A. K. Ma-combers horses in charge, was at the track this afternoon to enjoy the racing. Thomas C. McDowell lias purchased the interest in Waterblossom held by Charles H. Berryman, and this morning sold Poppee and Treowen to A. C McCroan. Mr. Berryman also held an interest in these. Sister Susie, Precious and Paramount, others in which Mr. Berryman is interested with Mr. McDowell, will be offered for sale.
