INFLUENCE OF ONE CAPITAL BROODMARE. The value of good "running" blood is well exemplified by the case of Hyeres. for in purchasing that mare the German owner. Hcrr von Lang-Puchhof. may be said to have laid the foundation of h:s successes on the German turf. Hyeres was one of the numerous daughters of St. Marguerite that, like their famous dam. achieved distinction at the stud. A sister to the Oaks and Leger heroine. Seabreeze, and a half-sister to Roque-brune dam of Rock Sand, Hyeres was bred in the purple, lieing by Isonomy. and although not so great a race mare as Seabreeze, she was a good winner. At the sale of the Sefton Stud broodmares and foals in 1S94, when only a five-year-old, she was bought by the German government for 2.S00 guineas, and in accordance with the Prussian policy for the Improvement of that countrys bloodstock, was sold then to the highest kidded. This was Herr v. Lang-Puchhof, who gave only 1.300 pounds for Mr. This deal cost the German government the difference, but a loss on a transaction of the kind to the state was as nothing. Year after year the same thing constantly happened, and the annual deficit incurred in this way must have come to an enormous sum. That was nothing, however, to Germany in comparison witli the betterment of the breed of thoroughbreds, and incidentally of half-breds for the German army, and I only mention it as affording an extraordinary contrast to the pettifogging stupidity of HMOS of our own members of Parliament who recently girded at the Coalition Government for paying a- comparatively small sum for the properties at Tally ami Russley. acquired in connection with Col. Hall Walkers primely gift to the nation of his stallions, broodmares and young stock. Let me get back to Hyeres. Siie proved herself a gold mine to her Bavarian buyer, for in addition to her foal at foot by Maeheath, afterwards ■amed Hauchon. she produced in turn, amongst others, a C. rman Derby winner in Hagen. which was by Charihet a roarer, which won the Two Thousand Guineas; Hut Ab by Talpra Magyar. Which von the German Oaks; and Hutschachtel by Matchbox, which secured, among other races, the valuable Grand Prize of Hamburg. Nor was this all. for Hut Ab in turn threw, to Gaga, the filly Hochzeit, which was also a German Oaks winner, liver, s, as most people will be aware, belonged to the famous No. 4 family, which is known as that of tiie I.ayton B.irb mare. The classic winners of this family in Engl;. ml include an extraordinary proportion of food mares, inclusive of Apology. Brig.intine, The Duchess, The Flea, Cantos. Gul.iarc. Hauteur. Kate. Manganese, Medora, Miss Jummy. Nightshade. Our Nell. Reve dOr. St. Marguerite. Seabreeze, Thebais, Throstle and Virago. — ■ Vigilant in London Sportsman.
