CAPITAL PIMLICO RACING BALTIMORE STEEPLECHASE RUN IN TWO DIVISIONS PRODUCES GOOD CONTESTS. Arlington Selling Handicap Falls to Water Lily and Slumber II. Wins the Arlington Handicap Under Heavy Weight — Track Gossip. Baltimore. Md., May 4. — Two divisions of the Baltimore Steeplechase was down for decision at Pimlico this afternoon, each over the two-mile course. Goad contests resulted from the running of each. The first division enabled trainer M. Smart to keep up h!s winning streak when he sent Falmouth to the iiost for H. T. Oxnard. while in the second division the colors of Thomas Hitchcock were victorious after a spirited contest in which Brentwood emerged with the honors. The second division furnished by far the more spirited contest, in which Brentwood gained the decision after a hard drive with Hearts of Oak. The latter has lost none of his meanness at the post, but showed a liking for crosM-country racing. Unsettled and cloudy weather conditions had no effect on the attendance, which was in keeping with the previous mid-week crowds. The racing was spirited throughout the afternoon and the public had a good line on the merits of the winners. Two handicaps were offered in addition to the steeplechase numbers, the Arlington Selling Handicap and the Merchants Handicap. The former was at three-quarters and resulted in victory for II. G. Bedwills Water Lily. The Merchants Handicap brought together a much smaller field, but of lietter quality. Slumber II. shouldered a heavy impost and disposed of Wooden Shoes after a hard drive from the head of the stretch. Martin Case.-: raced this afternoon in the interests of F. J. Coleman, having been purchased yesterday from F. Brown. Samuel Ross has purchased the jumper Bamlioo from Matt Smart and the latter will take him with his other steeplechasers to Toronto. Joseph McLennan has received word from the Connaught Park Jockey Club that they will offer two stakes for the coining spring meeting at Ottawa. The Connaught Park Cup Handicap at one mile, is to lie run on the opening day of the meeting and the Capitol City Handicap at one milo and a sixteenth will b-- run on the closing day. Before leaving for Toronto last night. Secretary W. P. Eraser said that he was extremely gratified with the way horsemen had responded with entries to the Toronto stakes. He said that the number of entries to the fixtures was of record breaking proportions and the steeplechase division at Woodbine this spring will be especially strong. This will mean that the jumping races* will fill well and as this branch of the sport is exceedingly popular with Canadians it should result in large crowds. William Garth will ship ten jumpers to Toronto. Gwynn Tompkins ten. Matt Smart seven, Harry Rites four. G. P. Sherman four. Captain W. F. Presgrave two and W. G. Wilson two. Other owners who will ship from here to Toronto at the conclusion of the meeting are R. F. Carman, W. Viau. William L. Oliver. Mirasol Stable. E. T. Zol-lieoffer, Edward McBride and J. S. Tyree. The latter has entered the high-class three-year-old King Neptune for the Toronto Cup. This is the colt for which Mr. Tyree refused 0,000 a few days ago. Richard Pickett, an old-time rider, has applied for a trainers license. Joseph McLennan, who is greatly interested in long-distance racing, will inaugurate in the conditions of some of the races in Canada an allowance of five pounds for horses that have never won at a mile. This allowance will be in races at one mile or over. Lucile P., Tarves, Doc Meals. MM, Be and Luther have been placed on the schooling list. Oscar Lewisohn arrived today from New York to spend a few days. Jockey E. Taplin. who is under contract to George Mom, came over from Belmont Park and made his re-appearance in the saddle successfully this afternoon. W. L. Oliver, who has been training Cincinnati here for D. Raymond, of Montreal, will ship that horse to Blue Bonnets this week. James Boden. who has the remainder of the string at Belmont Park, will ship to Toronto on Saturday. It was announced this afternoon that commencing next fall, no Pimlico purse will lie less than 00.
