AN OFF DAY AT JAMAICA FIELDS RULE SMALL BUT THE ATTENDANCE EXCEEDS THAT OF THE FIRST DAY. Sun God Wins Captain Cassatt His First Race of the Year — He Will Defeats Comely and Etruscan — Julialeon a Speedy Filly. New York. May 19. — It was not an especially inviting card at Jamaica today. The fields were decidedly light, with the Nevada Handicap as a feature. This brought out an entry of only five horses of moderate quality. Owing to bright sunshine and warm weather the crowd was larger than on the opening day and more enthusiastic notwithstanding the two and three horse contests. The track was fast. The unexpected happened in the second nice, which went to Sun God. He followed Cliff Haven for the three-quarters, then challenged. Cliff Haven quit and Sun God finished alone. Good Counsel showed little speed and Star Gaze was high in flesh. It was the first winner of the year for Captain E. B. Cassatt. The winner was neglected in the betting, the support being on Cliff Haven. Sandy McNaughton bid up the winner from ,200 to ,000 and he was bought in for ,005. The talent made no mistake in the third race, for which Estimable was made a decided choice. She won as her rider pleased from the driving Flag Day. which had all he could do to beat Ash Can for second place. The latter was high in flesh. In the handicap so fast was the pace that Lord Rock Vale and Comely could not keep up. Etruscan maintained a good lead until turning for home, where He Will challenged and Etruscan retired. Comely then came along and. while she heat Ktruscnn. she could not get to He Will. Lord ISock Vale kept close to the others for about three-eighths and then retired. He has a fretful disposition judging from his antics on the way to the ;iost. There was a mighty close finish in the fifth race between Monocacy and Devil Fish, in which the latter dwelt in the last few strides after having headed the Talbott horse. The latter just got up to win in the last stride. The two had made the pac . with Monocacy lending. Devil Fish challenged at the eighth post and it was a whipping finish to the end. Luther was never a serious contender, though a decided choice in the market. Sam Lewis, owner of Murphy and other horses, has an attack of pneumonia. While it was serious for a few days, he is now improving. According to lawn gossip, there are more "slip tackers" than patrons at Jamaica. "Theyll thin out." said one of the old brigude, "when they get a bump or two, either from the welchers or wise horse players." It is common paddock talk that there are others in Mr. Belmonts stable which can beat Wood-trap, the good colt which won the first race yesterday. Walter Jennings is due at Gravesend this evening with the Macomber horses from Kentucky. His going to Gravesend necessitates his shipping by automobile when he enters any of his horses at Belmont Park. Tom Welch will also train the horses he has belonging to J. E. Widener nt Gravesend. Congressman George W. Loft had the pleasure of winning his first race, when Julialeon. a filly by Helmet — Frances, captured the opening dash. That she has shown well was sure, as the smart set backed her from 8 to 1 to 13 to 5. The speed she showed indicates she will win more races. It was no trouble for her to race into a long lead and hold it to the end. She tired in the final eighth, but Cockshell, her nearest opponent, was also weary. James Rowe. who returned east with the Whitney racers, was a visitor at Belmont Park this morning. Willie Midgeley has obtained first call on jockey McCahey for Gilford A. Cochran. Trojan, winner of the 1914 Futurity, has been taken up again and is training soundly. Fred Burlew will bring a number of Clarence Mackays yearlings to this country in July ami they will go under the hammer. The A. K. Macomber racers, including Star Hawk. arrived at Belmont Park this morning. George Smith, it is said, will not race again lie-fore the running of the Latonia Derby. lie is being trained at Belmont Park for that "event.
