1 1 CAPITAL OPENING AT JAMAICA. Sand Marsh First in the Excelsior Handicap, with Flying Fairy a Good Second. New York, June 15. — The Jamaica meeting was opened today, with the Excelsior Handicap as the feature. The race went to Sand Marsh in front of Flying Fairy. Slumber II. and Chicle, the latter three closely bunched. The start was the most i er-foet imaginable, so much so that the field ran like a line of cavalry for fifty yards, after which Sand Marsh. Capra. Slumber II. and Flying Fairy moved to the front and the others began to straggle out. Sand Marsh opened up a three lengths lead in the first three-eighths, followed by Capra. Slumber II. and Flying Fairy. These four had the race practically to themselves for three-quarters. Then Capra began to weaken, as did Slumber II.. but those behind were also leg worry. Sand Marsh continued to load by a safe margin when turning for home, where Flying Fairy began to threaten and I.utwoll went to the whip. Sand Marsh responded resolutely and won by a good margin, though he was tiring. Flying Fairy was also getting weary and Slumber II., coining again, accompanied by Chicle, the latter next to the rail, gamed with every stride and was going faster at the finish, but just failed to get to Flying Fairy for seeond place. Chicle would have been second in a few more strides and was going fastest of the four leaders. The Finn was never a dangerous factor. Neither was Koiy. Sharpshooter was the only withdrawal. He was coughing slightly this morning and Mr. Parsons decided not to start him. Chilly weather greeted race goers and wraps were much in demand. The turnout, however, was of goodly size and the racing of the highest order. The opener went to Kathryn Gray, which after racing forwardly throughout easily outstayed Aimee T. and Solveig. There were twenty three named to go in the second but scratches reduced the original field to thirteen, over which Etruscan ruled an odds-on choice. There was nothing to the race but Etruscan, as Taplin got him away clear of interference and he only had to canter to win by a safe margin. Pandean, heavily backed by all the smart set easily accounted for the third, after Ambrose, the early pacemaker, had retired. Sam McMeekin, the favorite, won the fifth after Havnes extricated him from a poeket on the stretch turn. J. J. Lillis ran fairly well, but evidently needed this race. Star Gaze also was one that showed a flash of his old time form and will doubtless improve. After Etruscan had won the second race, he was the target of competition, P. S. P. Randolph and G. Alexandra both bidding on the Greentree Stables sprinter and carrying him up to ,500. at which figure he was knocked down to the former. The horse has been suffering from a bad leg for some time, which accounted for his entry for 00. R. L. Rresler has purchased from W. Burke the contract on the apprentice rider J. Sterrett, who has had several mounts lately. The Breeding Sanaa of the .Tockev Club is in receipt of the throe -year-old colt Estimator from A. L. Aste. and the horse will be sent to George P. Servis in the Genesee valley in New York state. Jockey loftus will not make the trip to Latonia to ride George Smiht in the Derby as was reported. Jockey P. Lowder made his first appearance in the east this year when he rode Chicle in the Excelsior Handicap for his contract employer, H. P. Whitney.
