TUMBLER FIRST IN THE YOUTHFUL STAKES. Slumber II. Takes the Montague Handicap at Jamaica with Ease — Track Gossip. New York. June 20.— The Youthful Stakes for two-year-olds, served as todays chief attraction at Jamaica and it gave race-goers another opportunity to witness Harry Payne Whitneys good colt Tumbler in action. The big colt began well, but was sharply cut off right after the start and T. McTaggart had to take him back. He was soon racing up to the leaders, however. McTaggart taking advantage of an opening next to the rail to drive him through, ami In- was soon in front. Although inclined to swerve in the stretch, under nursing he easily maintained his advantage to win with much ease. Barring his seeming greeness. which he seems to have difficulty in overcoming, he stands nut over most of the two-year-olds in the east. The Youthful was worth .91*5 to the winner. The Montague, a handicap at one mile and a sixteenth, resulted in victory for the heavily-backed Slumber II.. which was also ridden by T. McTaggart. The Tnlhott gelding went into an early lead, which lie maintained to the end. In turning for home, however, he forced Blue Thistle wide, then drew away to win easily. After a short deliberation the stewards allowed the result to stand. as the winner was dearly best and the going being lK-tter in the iniddl" portion of the course his rider naturally selected it. Sam McMeekin. another odds-on choice, won the fifth after Sir William Johnson, the early pacemaker, retired in tin- stretch. Woodward was excused from the final race, on account of having a slight attack of colic. Harry La Montague has purchased from the Oneck Stable the speedy four-year-old Distant Shore for a rejMiited price of ,500. Gerard F. Stuvesant. one of the oldest members of the Coney Island Jockey Club, was a visitor at the races today, it being his first appearance in over ten years. Charles F. Orainger. president of the New Louisville Jockey b.li. was also a visitor. H. Morrison has bought from K. H. Garrison a two-year-old colt by Dr. Boots. A. H. Vivell was a visitor today from the Canadian half-mile track circuit in the interest of those meetings. An x-ray examination Kbowed that jockey Q. lreece, who was injured by being kicked by Fen-jnouse at the post yesterday while astride Etrus-can. had suffered a fracture of one of his legs in three places. William Slieedy is iu St. Marys hospital in Jamaica following a slight operation. John W. Bangle is an arrival from Canada and will doubtless secure some horses here before leaving. The three-year-old George Smith, winner of the Kentucky Derby and second horse in the Latonia Derby, has arrived at Belmont Iark from Latonia. seemingly none the worse for his western trip.
