MUDDY BUT CHEERFUL AT OTTAWA. Queen of the Sea Wins in a Head-and-Head Finish with Lynette and Bondage. Ottawa. Out.. June 20. — Surprises were the order at ••nnaught Park this afternoon. Track conditions were still bad. but despite this, some interesting sport was witnessed. The feature race furnished a stirring contest iu which the first three I.is ;• d the winning mark heads and necks apart. The winner turned up in Queen of the Sea. which beat Lynette a head. Bondage, the favorite, was third, a neck away. The latter was on the outside for the entire race. He finished with a rush, hut could not quite make it. Willi a stronger finisher than Mountain up. he undoubtedly would have won. Viley. the beaten favorite in the first race, ran a sifh further than any horse in the race. Kopple-nian kept him near the outside rail to the eighth post in the homestretch, where he swerved over to the inside and finished in the deep going. After Idle Michaels victory in the steeplechase he went back to his old owner. W. L. Maupin. William iarth purchased the horse from William Stormont at private sale for Mr. Maupin after the race. The Canadian branch of the Thoroughbred Horse Association held a meeting here last night and decided to make an effort to interest the Connaught Park Jockey Club iu a race to lie run on the closing day of the meeting in which the purse will lie donated to the patriotic fund. The horsemen propose cut. -ring the best material at the track in the race so as to make it a strong attraction. The mutter has been taken uuUer advisement by the club. The horsemen at their meeting decided to send William Walker to Montreal on Thursday for a conference with the owners of the half-mile tiaekl in an effort to adjust the differences between the track owners and the horsemen. It has been decided to insist on 00 purses. It is said that the only track that is holding out against the increased purses is Delorimier Park. S. N. Holman. manager of the King Edward Park course, has already notified the horsemen that no purse of less than 00 will be given at his meeting. William Carth returned yesterday from Montreal, where he went to look over his two-year-old, Dr. Nelson, that was so badly cut down in his last start at Blue Bonnets. H I is pleased with the way the colt is doing and now has hopes that he will rocover from his injuries, which it was at one time feared would result fatally. Jockey J. P. Smyth, who disappeared from Ottawa a couple of days ago. has turned up in Montreal. The lad found the task of keeping down to weight a trying one and it may be that he has decided to retire from the saddle. Among todays visitors were Lieutenant and Sirs. J. K. L. Ross, in whos.1 colors Damrosch and Incle Bryn race. Several stables were shipped to Hamilton this afternoon, among them those of H. G. Bedwell, J. O. Byrne, E. Murray and J. F. Richardson.
