HAWTHORNE BEING ACTIVELY PREPARED. Now that the Latonia Derby has passed into the realm of things accomplished, the Illinois Jockey Clubs American De-rby stands out by itself as the richest stake race- for three-ye-ar-edds yet to lie de-cide-d this year. It is this fe-aturo of the race • that must more and more.- impress owners as the time for closing entries draws near and should induce the nomination of the majority of the good three--year-olds of the year. Active- preparations for the meeting are in progress at Hawthorne. Recent rains have interfered considerably with work, but much has been done notwithstanding this impediment. The entire floor in the front part of the grandstand, the press stand included, has been repaired and is now in good con-tlitioli. Chairs will be received before this week eloses and will Im- placed in their proper i ositions in good time. New twixcs will be put in forthwith. The track has l een well harrowe-d. but so far has Ix-en too soft for dragging. A few days of the warm weather now due will suffice to permit its being worked into its leest possible condition. Two of the largest stable-s had been reroofed last Sunday and a big force of men is proceeding with necessary repairs on the others. The plant in general is beginning to present a sightly condition of preparedness. Shortly it wiH approximate the Hawhorne of -i dozen years hack and be swarming with thoroughbreds in preparation for the racing of next month.
