JAMAICA MEETING COMES TO AN END. K An Exciting Race and Finish Marks the Running of Friars Handicap — Brooklyn Handicap Today. . New York. June 23. — The Friars Handicap Z proved one of those races calculated to bring the * spectators to their feet. The start had hardly lx-en / made when Marse Henry, Comely and Startling ] singled out and raced ln-ads apart for a i|uarter 0 of a mile. Then Marso Henry forged to the front .1 followed by Comely ami Startling. It then seemed 5 that Marse Henry would make a runaway race of 7, it. He gained a long lead on Comely with Old T, Koenig third a couple of lengths off. Marse Henry ,7, turned for home with a three lengths lead and ., Comely began to tire. Taplin wont to the whip t on Marse Henry when also ha lx-g.m to tire per- T, oepitibly when a sixteenth from the goal, while ■ Old Koenig coming fast, passed Comely, challenged the loader and got up in time to win in a hard drive. Comely retired and Startling accounted for . third money. The others wore trailers spread out ! all over the track. George Odom. who trains Marse- j Henry thought he would have won had not Taplin resorted to the whip. The time. 1:13%, was tin- . fastest of the meeting. Old Koenig kicked Comely while- at the post, but the injury could hardly have * keen serious, as she showed much speed for a half -mil-. , Today, the final day of racing at Jamaica, was « notable for the success of short-priced favorites in J most of the races. Racing shifts to the Aqueduct course tomorrow. ., where an excellent program, featured by the run- o ning of the Brooklyn Handicap, is down for lie- ? cision. The latter has attracted a big field of the ., iM-st horses in training in the east and a great ~, content is looked for. The fact that Uoamor is to 7, be a starter is alone a feature, as the HUH gelding is always a proworful drawing card. Cheer, minted at a short Brian, won the oiiener easily from Scdveig. the early pacemaker. When j called on in the stretch Cheer raced past Solveig without ililliculty. The defeat of Iandean, quoted at a short price for the second, was a surprise, as the horse seemed , to have the race at his mercy. He was in close quarters at the head of the stretch, however, and ; " was unable to extricate himself until too late. • Moiiooaey, from tin- same stable as Iandean. made good at prohibitive odds. It was an easy ; victory for the hotae, he leading throughout. Republican, heavily backed, showed a good par- ; form. nice in the fifth, which he won as his rider j pleased. Tin- Itrighton Stable furnished another -. short -priced favorite in the sixth in Prisoilla. • quoted at odils-on. and she made good with ease. . The horse Saratoga was awarded to J. W. Hedrick . yesterday, the stewards deciding in his favor after secretary Edwards had refused to accept his personal chock for the horse. The stewards decided that the sum of money he had on deposit was sufficient. After Cheer had won the opener, she was bid up fiom to ,100 by G. Alexandra, but he failed to get her. L. II. Baxter purchased Schoolboy from P. S. P. Randolph and the horse ran iu his new owners colors today. Larry Carey purchased Old Koenig from II. T.
