Rees accounted for the St. Bernard Handicap which featured this afternoons card at Latonia in impressive fashion from the good band that contested the race. The Grader was in second place and Red Cloud third. The favorite Lady Itotlia made a decidedly disappointing showing in view of her recent winning races. She showed the most speed until rounding the stretch turn, then began to tire fast. Capt. Rees after being saved for a half mile, moved up rapidly and taking the lead had speed enough in reserve to outstay The Grader. The latter was given energetic riding today and was going fast at the end. Ideal weather again served to bring out a banner attendance. The speculation, however, was not as extensive as on many other days. The talent is becoming somewhat chary, due to recent form reverses entailing heavy losses. They fared poorly again, for several upsets attended tins afternoons racing. The defeat of Money aild Julia L., favorites for the third and fourth races, were attended by considerable loss for the major portion of the speculative crowd, who regarded them as the best betting propositions of the afternoon. Both of these beaten favorites showed much early speed and ran flatteringly until straightened out for the stretch drive. Nettie Walcutt, showing improved form under superior riding, scored over Money, and Lady Always, making her first start since the Churchill Downs meeting, took Julia L.s measure somewhat easily. Kagura graduated from the maiden class in the opening dash, after having led for nearly the entire way. There was some interest manifested in the running of Mary Belle, a first-time starter in the race. She showed a brief flash of speed and probably will improve on this showing.
