IMPORTED HORSES SLOW AT BARRIER. NeAV York, July 3. Mars Cassidy, Avhose experience in the starters stand covers many years, says that the imported horses, Avith the possible exception of Chicle, arc slow beginners. "They get away from the barrier well enough,; says Cassidy, "but after they are on their Avay they seem to loiter. The" do not show the early dash and resolution of the "home-bred product. This may be due to their earlv education in England, as it is more pronounced in the older horses here than the two-year-olds. I reckon Chicle just cannot help shooting out, as he is Iired with exceptional speed lines contracted from h.s ancestors. He stands alone of all the imported horses in regard to early speed. Spearmint, they tell me, Avas a Avonderful horse, while his dam, Lady Hamburg II., comes from a family of speedv forebears. I suppose the English and French riders arc not instructed to start off with a dash, as they are here, or to fight for early positions. If this is the case, then the disposition of the English horses to loaf in the first part of a race can be accounted for."
