AN OFF DAYS RACING AT AQUEDUCT. Gillies Takes His Race in Derby Style Chiclet Wins and Makes a Good Impression. New York, July 7. It was a dull sort of a day at Aqueduct, with humidity aplenty. As is usual on Fridays, the card was poor, with little to attract unless the race for the hunters could be called a feature. An overnight handicap brought out some good horses. John E. Maddens American Derby candidate, Sillies, won this race after racing Holiday into defeat. The two had the race to themselves until in the last eighth, barely a length separating them from start to finish. In the last eighth Harry Shaw came along the rail and might have Avon had not Holiday tired in front of him. forcing him to pull out from the rail. This injured his chances, as he is a notorious rail runner. Gillies showed a good performance by beating older horses to which he was conceding weight. Garbage; was well supported for the race, but he failed to race up to expectations. Bac also retired early. McTaggart claimed interference in the race, but his plea was immediately dismissed. Twenty new boxes have been built in the grandstand at Saratoga and of the 111 in the front row S3 have been sold to date, which speaks well for the interest taken in this seasons racing at the Spa. The Westchester Racing Association will at its autumn meeting revive the Lawrence Realization. When run over the Sheepshead Bay course it was at one mile and five-eighths. At Belmont Park the distance will be one mile and a quarter. Entries for this event will close in August. The Crossways Stable has donated to the state breeding bureau the imported brown horse Square Deal, by Simon Square No Trumps. Al Bloch and Dancer have both fallen lame and will not be heard from for some time. The stable of G. A. Alexandra will go to Windsor tomorrow. Chiclet was the first horse that Thomas Welsh lias sent to the post in America since 1909, when he trained the horses of the Newcastle Stable, in which establishment he was a partner. Welsh thinks highly of Chiclet and said after the race that he was a well bred horse, his second dam being Correction. His dam. Nature was sent from J. E. Wideners French stud to Ireland to be mated with Spearmint, then returned to France, where Chiclet was foaled. Today was his third start. In his first start in France lie finished second to W. K. Vanderbilts Battle, ran third in his next start and won in todays race. Aqueduct work-outs with the track fast were: Amalgamator Three-eighths in 3S. Rurlingamc Half mile in 55.
