EMPIRE CITY DISFAVORED DISAGREEABLE WEATHER AGAIN DETRACTS FROM ENJOYMENT OF THE SPORT. Spur Runs a Capital Raco in Winning the Midsummer Handicap ICini; Baggot Inflicts a Surprise on His Many Backers, t Now York, .Inly 20. More disagreeable weather was in ston? for race-goers today and. coupled with tin street car tieup anil the failure of several well-backed "good things," made it rather an unsatisfactory afternoon all around. The Midsummer Handicap, for three-year-olds at one mile with .111 added, served as the afternoons feature. The defeat of King Bnggot in the first race was a surprise, as the colt was heavily hacked at odds-on. Ilanohala was relumed an easy winner over the Kentucky Stables Courtship, essaying its first start. I.oh Ilensley made good in the second after being hacked to the exclusion of the remainder of the field, lie won by a big margin, as in his last start. Spur accounted for the stake race over the three other starters. Vermont set the p:co for the first half mile, and then was challenged by Dick Williams. Loftus had been running along within striking distance with Spur and. when Dick Williams wont up on the outside, drove Spur through next to the inner rail. The Butler colt responded and was soon in front. After turning for home, Dick Williams made a menacing move and Loftus drew his whip, whereupon Spur came away to win easily with Dick Williams in second place and Vlandria third. Spurs effort can be considered a creditable one. as the colt had a hard race behind Koanier in the Yonkers Ilauilcap hist Saturday and many good judges today reasoned it had taken something out of him. but his victory showed him to be at his best. The time. 1:42. was good, considering the slowness of the track and the winners impost of 128 pounds. Secretary A. McL. Enrlocker left for Saratoga today and will open the offices of the Saratoga Racing Association in the Granrt Union Hotel Thursday. Charles G. Logan accompanied him and will a :imie charge of the reading rooms in the Grand Union and place them in order. .1. W. lleilrick claimed Daddy Long Legs out. of the first race yesterday for ,500 and later sold him to Emil Her, at an advance. II. Pink bid Dob Ilensley up from ,000 to hB,"00 after that, racer scored in tin second isieo. .1. L. Marrono made a bid earlier and Finks bid of ,200 failed to get the horse, he being protected by his stable. .1. .1. Murnn bid Jesse ,lr. up after the Iledrick horse had won the third race. Then- were several bids by other horsemen and Moraii then bid ,!U0. Iledrick protected the horse. T. .1. Healey, trainer of the R. T. Wilson boics. was a visitor today from Saratoga, where lie has been for several days. lie reported everything in great shape at the Spa anil predicted a big season of racing.
