FINE OPENING OF HAMILTONS MEETING. Black Brcom Wins tho Prince Edward Selling: Stakes in a Close Finish. Hamilton, Out., July 20. The second meeting of the Hamilton Jockey Club was ushered in this afternoon, lie fore a large gathering. Despite the heat a big crowd made the trip from Toronto to witness the sport. Buffalo also sent over a large contingent. Itacing conditions were all that the most ardent admirer of the sport could wish for. Kd ward Trotter furnished the winner of tin; feature race, the Prince Edward Selling Stakes, a dash of one mile and a sixteenth with ,500 added, when I.ack I .room got up in the closing strides to beat Fountain Fay by a neck. Fountain Fay was a forward contender from the start and in the filial eighth, when Black Broom got on equal terms with him. tried to savage the latter. It was a great day for the followers of jockey F. Robinson, as that skillful rider won with his firrt four mounts. Among the interested spectators was J. . Keene, who arrived this morning. Mr. Keene motored from Lexington to Hamilton. He will remain for a couple of days and. while here, will arrange to ship four of his horses to Saratoga, among them Hie two-year-old filly Yermilla. The latter is an eligible for the Spinaway Stakes and she is being sent there to fill that engagement. Mr. Keene may go to Russia at "the conclusion of the present season. Ho has been offered an engagement to train in that country and has it under consideration. Steeplechase jockey J. Smith was suspended by the stewards for what was termed a listless ride on Jim O. Jockeys B. Shilling and W. Ward were suspended for two days by the starter for disobedience at the post. Harry Bites, complained to the stewards that he had engaged jockey Callahan to ride his colt Sea I.each in the fifth race, and that the rider did not put in an appearance to fill his engagement. Jockey It. McDermott, who has been riding for the James Butler stable on the eastern tracks, was an arrival. McDermott has been released by Mr. I.utler and will finish the racing season on the Canadian circuit. This lad is a native of Hamilton, and last year rode for It. L. Bresler. Acting in accordance with the suggestion made by the members of the Thoroughbred Horse Association. Secretary A. B. Loudon changed the conditions of all selling races and. in the future, the winners of these races are liable to be claimed for the entered price, plus the value of the race to the first. horse. This will apply to all selling races, except sidling handicaps. It was also recommended that a cheap race be put on every day, in which all horses may be claimed for the entered price only. This was done to insure owners of the poorer grades of horses an opportunity of winning a purse. W. Perkins, acting for C. T. Worthiugton. has purchased the contract that A. L. Austin held on jockey A. Mott. J. P. Richardson was an arrival from Fort Erie with the .1. Lumsdeu horses. He also brought over eight two-year-olds that Howard Dots left at Fort Erie when he shipped his stable to Windsor. G. If. Keenn came over from Fort Erie on Saturday last. Allie Gates and Albert Simons are still at Fort Erie. James Bowe and Dr. B. W. McCnlly were at Fort Erie a few days ago looking over the Harry Payne Whitney string. Progressive made his first appearance in several months when he carried the colors of the Buffalo turfman, Thomas Francis, in the fourth nice. Manokiu was saddled by Harry Bites. Tin? latter has the colt in charge during the absence i of his owner, II. G. Bedwell, who is racing at Hawthorne. It was a notable day for the colors of Sir John Ilendrie. the esteemed lieutenant-governor of Ontario, Thoughtful and Splutter carrying them to victory. The final race of the day was followed by a severe shower, which may dull the track a bit for tomorrows racing.
