KEWESSA SURMISES THEM COMES FROM BEHIND IN MUDDY GOING AND OUTSTAYS PORT LIGHT. Ticket Carries High Weight and Wins tho Wakefield Handicap in a Game Finish Good .! Counsel Wins and Is Sold. New York. .Inly 27. Torrid weather prevailed at Empire City today and the hot sun dried the track out considerably. The racing was good and was marked by close contests. The afternoons feature, the Wakefield Handicap, was contested by only three starters. Ticket. Killdee and Jock Scot, with the first-named ruling at short odds. Kewessa furnished a surprise when he accounted for the third race, a handicap at about three-quarters. The Oliver gelding had never shown a liking for slow going before, but today he came from behind to wear Port Light, the early pacemaker, down in the closing strides. The latter was away forwardly and, showing a high flight of speed, opened a long lead. On the stretch turn Kewessa, mildly urged, moved up and, in a drive, outstayed the tiring pacemaker. Good Counsel accounted for the opener in easy fashion after racing Golden Gate into defeat in the first three-quarters. The defeat of Carlton G. was costly to the talent, as the old horse seemed to be in a soft spot, but Royal Interest, repeating his vetory of a few days back, went into an early lead, which he inantaiiieil to the end despite his high impost. Carlton G. moved up menacingly on the far turn, and only lost by a narrow margin. After Hood Counsel had won the first race he was advanced from to ,200 by .1. W. llod-rick. and sold to him. For an unsatisfactory ride on Ambrose yesterday jockey H. Shilling has been suspended for the remainder of the meeting. The horse was beaten off ;ifter showing some early speed. Tho .1. O. Talbott stable will be shipped to .Saratoga Friday. Between races Ed Crump worked a mile and an eighth in liiS-fr, in preparation for the .Mount Vernon Handicap Saturday. Coquette also worked three quarters in 1:211-,-,. Ticket had his work cut out for him to win the Wakefield Ilnndieip. Off in front, the Miller colt soon took a good lead, followed by Killdee. Ticket made a wide turn into tin- stretch, but still maintained his lead at the eighth post, where he swerved badly to the center of the track, .lock .Scot, closing up fast on the outside, loomed up dangerously. Butwell, however, soon got Ticket straightened out and went to work on him with his whip, .look .Scot got to his withers, but could get no further and Ticket went on to win under a hard drive. Heavy support for Killdee enabled the backers of Ticket to get more liberal odds than seemed likely. After Daingerfield won lie was bid up by .1. L. 3lnrroue from .$".00 to ,000 and sold to the latter. Work-outs today at Empire City with the track feloppy. were: Andes Mil" in 1:.r.7. Aldebaran -Five-eighths in l:0Si.
