ONE OF ENGLANDS CRACK JOCKEYS. No rider has attracted greater notice in the course of the present abbreviated racing season than Joseph Chiids, who is disputing supremacy with the champion of the past two years, Steve Donoghue. Though Chiids has spent the greater portion of his life as a jockey abroad, he is an English product. He was apprenticed to Mr. Tom Jennings. Jr., and was in the latter years of the nineteenth century one of our most capable lightweights. It was for Mr. Jennings that Chiids rode his first winner, the same being a filly named Lady Alicia, and the race an apprentice plate at Lincoln. Rather curiously, the favorite for this event was Rambling Katie, on which Chiids a twelvemonth later recorded his first important handicap success, this being in the Manchester Cup. In the same vear Chiids also won the Roynl Hunt Cup on Stealaway and the Great Yorkshire Handicap on Balsarroch. which later in the season carried off the Cesarewitch, in which Chiids was third on Rambling Katie. Another notable triumph was scored on Congratulation in the Great Metropolitan of 1902. On the expiration of his apprenticeship Chiids migrated to France, and it was not long before he "made good" in the land of our gallant ally, obtaining plenty of patronage and riding a fair percentage of winners. In 1908 he won the Grand Prix de Paris on Mr. Vanderbilts Northeast. This was the race in which Sir Archibald, ridden by Mr. George Thursby, represented England; but the son of Desmond made no show. Chiids at one time or another also rode the winner of most of the other important French races. He was not often seen in England hereabouts, but in 1912 he visited Epsom to ride M. J. Prats Mirska in the Oaks. This race was deemed to be at the mercy of Tagalie, which had won the Derby two days previously; but Chiids mount, against which 33 to 1 was laid, won in a canter from another outsider in Equitable, with the favorite unplaced. With racing brought to a standstill across the channel owing to the war, Chiids last year returned to his native land, and was during the latter part of the season seen in the saddle fairly frequently. Altogether he had 107 mounts, riding ten winners, and being placed on twenty-one other occasions. This year he has been riding as first jockey for Mr. E. Hulton, and the Manchester owner- could not have made a better choice. Chiids has ridden several fine finishes since the season opened at Gatwick. but lie has never been seen to greater advantage than when Fifinella won the New-Derby by a neck from Kwang-Su. He was also on the back of Silver Tags half-sister when she won the Oaks. Altogether this season lie has ridden twenty-two winners, and is now but three behind Donoghue.
