SOME SARATOGA UPSETS ULTIMATUM FAILS BADLY AND FINISHES UNPLACED IN HIS RACE. i 1 Conning Tower First in the Catskill Selling Stakes Mont dOr a Failure Hanson Defeats Sand j Marsh by Inches Small Talk of the Track. , By .7. L. Dempsey. Saratoga Springs. X. Y., August 3. Tlic Catskill Moiling Stakes, at seven-eighths, featuring this afternoons card, fell to Conning Tower, the favor- ite. with Lady Teresa second and the hitters stablemato, Ronnie Toss, in third place. The winner led after the lirst eighth, but had to be ridden strongly near the end and was tiring steadily. Sandman II. was given much consideration in a betting way. but any chance he might have had was ruined by the incompetency of his rider at the post and during the running. Conning Tower was entered to be sold for ,000 and was advanced to ,000, at which figure he was bought by II. -Fink. The horse will probably go hack to the Shilling establishment. The Catskill has been run continuously since 1901 except in 1911 and 191-, when there was no racing in New York state. Its condensed history follows: Year. "Winner. A.Wt. Jockey. Val. Time. Shilling. 1,000 1:20 Distance 3-4 mile in 1901. Threatening weather, with an occasional light sprinkle, did not deter another big crowd from visiting the course. The racing was interesting, but brought with it many upsets. They began when riliniatunt, a supposed crack, which earlier in the year his owner was eager to match against Harry Kelly, failed badly" in the opener, Columbine winning easily. Another outstanding disappointment was Mont dOr, the 0,000 French spued marvel which showed only ordinary form in the third race. Schuyler L. Parsons Hanson won the race by a short margin over Sand Marsh. The latter showed a cracking good performance in carrying 38S pounds and being in the thickest of contention all of the way. The steeplechase over the two-mile course, though contested by only a mediocre hand, was the best race of this kind during the meeting. The starters all finished the course without mishap and in fairly close order. Rupica won from Al Reeves, with Agon third. The Western and Kentucky contingent, suffered extensively by the failure of K. It. Bradleys Blind Baggage in the fifth. He flattered his backers until the last eighth, where he showed signs of distress and in the drive that followed Malachite beat him easily. Secretary Mel,, Earloekcr. on behalf of the Saratoga Association, lias invited owners and trainers to make suggestions relative to conditions for the programs of the last twelve days of the meeting. Jefferson Livingston lost Polroma by the claiming process out of yesterdays race. Jules Garson became the owner of the horse for 2,005. S. Lewis has acquired Brother Jonathan and Max Hirsch will continue to train him. Mrs. G. L. Peines Kathryn Gray has been shipped to Fort Erie, where she will lie raced. Charles T. Ilenshall and Grant Hugh Browne were visitors en route from Montreal to New York. Wilbur It. Smith and Itobert Nelson were late additions from Hawthorne and joined the lawn contingent. The yearlings bought for Mrs. "Walter McJeffords account, have been turned over to trainer W. II. Karrick, who will shortly send them to Belmont Park, where they will receive their early training lessons. T. C. McDowells Queen Errant came out of the Spinaway Stakes with numerous cuts about the legs, where she had been jumped on frequently. America, in both her starts here, showed a dislike for the track. YVaterblossom and Star Jasmine are both back in training and showing considerably less soreness than they did during tiie latter part of the Kentucky racing season. Trainer Pete Coyne, in charge of the George J. Long racers, is going along slowly with his charges, the horses being in excellent fettle. Kathleen is intended as a starter in the Alabama Stakes next week and owner Long will be here to see her run. Trainer George M. Odom stated this afternoon that he wis preparing Tom McTaggart for his engagement in the Saratoga Special, which will mark that crack colts first appearance here. The good filly Sprint, also trained by Odom, will be a starter in the Alabama Stakes. Jockey Charles Borcl intends making a visit to Buenos Aires soon, where he intends to ride. The hishlv-tried Crimper, which scored impressively in yesterdays closing race, is said to be owned by Mr. A. S. Cosden, an oil magnate of Baltimore and was bought for his account by Ral Parr, in whose colors he ran. It is also said the late H. B. Duryea regarded the colt with high favor and had expected him to duplicate Dur-bars feat of winning the Epsom Derby. J E Widener remained over to enjoy another day of the sport before returning to Philadelphia. Secretary W. P. Fraser, of the Ontario Jockey Club, is expected here next Saturday in the interest of his association, whose valuable stakes are to be closed shortly. William Jordan, of New Orleans, was among todays visitors. Lady Teresa, the runner-up in the stake race, was claimed for ,100 by J. O. Talbott.
