MACKAY YEARINGS BRING HIGH PRICES. Saratoga Springs, N. Y., August 12. If any doubt existed as to the future of the turf, it was dispelled by the result of the sale of the thoroughbred yearlings from the Clarence II. Mackay stud in France, nineteen head passing under the hammer for a total of 3,550. representing an average of .i;2.292. Newcomers competed for the choice offerings with notables in llie turf world, and W. S. Kilmer paid the top price, ,500, for the chestnut filly by Rock Sand Audience, dam of Whisk Broom II., outlasting August Belmont, Frederick Johnson. Tom Welsh and others. After the sale Mr. Kilmer said: "I was prepared to go much higher." The next highest price, 1916.sh,000. was paid ly Andrew Miller for the bay colt by Fitz Herbert Mistress Penn. Frederick Johnson, W. S. Kilmer and Thomas Welsh were contenders for this youngster up to ,900. As an indication that breeders are looking for choice material for tiieir studs, it may be men-, tioued that the final lot offered, a bay filly by Meddler Ballantrae, winner of the Cambridgeshire and the dam of numerous winners, although a hopeless cripple for racing purposes, brought ,000. Messrs. August Belmont, A. B. Hancock, Frederick Johnson and George 1. Widener, Jr., all bid for her, ami the last-named finally secured her. After the sale Mr. Mackay said: I bought Fita Herbert for 0,000, because I thought hi! would make a good stock horse. I offered 0,000 for him when he was racing and did not get him.
