COfWAUGHT PARK RACING- " OTTAWAS COURSE SLOW AND LUMPY, BUT IMPROVING THROUGH THE AFTERNOON. Christie Proves an Easy "Winner in the Main Race of the Day, hut Grumpy Has Bad Luck Graphic Scores Again Notable Visitors at the Track. Ottawa. Out.. August 31. The races at Con-naught Park this afternoon were run over a drying out track. The going was lumpy and slow next to the rail, but as the afternoon progressed the footing improved. There were no withdrawals of those programmed. The feature race, the Military Handicap, proved easy for Christie, which beat his opponents by a big margin. There was a bit of rough riding while going to the first turn, where Grumpy was crowded against, the fence and Warrington was forced to pull him up. But for the mishap Grumpy would have been a dangerous competitor. Christie won easily after drawing away into a long lead on the last turn. Graphic, which won at the first time of asking at Windsor, came back this afternoon and scored again iu easy fashion. The Thorncliffe Stable seemingly has a pair of useful two-year-olds in Incog and Graphic. Hart Dernliain. who will act as racing secretary ;it Timonium. left for Baltimore tonight. While here he arranged for the shipment of a carload of horses from Ottawa direct to Baltimore. In the consignment will be the stables of E. J. McGraw and R. O. Egan. in charge of Steve Judge. Sheridan Clark, who will act as racing secretary at Dorval. will leave for Montreal immediately following the close of the races on Saturday. The three-year-old Prohibition, which was taken sick after his arrival here, is galloping again, having entirely recovered from his illness. Jockey F. Robinson leaves for New York tomorrow morning to fill the engagement he made while at Windsor to ride one of the Harry Payne Whitney two-year-olds in the Futurity. Several horsemen racing here also made the trip. Among those who left were A. C. Parretto. William Stor-mont and Sam Louis. While iu New York these owners will try to purchase some horses and, if successful, will shin them to Montreal to finish out the Canadian season. Trainer W. Shields was indisposed today and in his absence his horses were looked after by his brother John. Among the distinguished visitors at Couuutight Park this afternoon were Sir John Hendrie and Lady Hendrie. Sir Evarist Le Blanc and Lady Le Blanc. The former gentleman is lieutenant - governor of Ontario and the latter lieutenant-gov-I t-rnor of Quebec Henry Watterson, owner of the Mirasol Stable, 1 was an arrival from New York and will remain I for the rest of the meeting. The good handicap horse Runes is rounding into form again after a brief let-up. Steeplechase jockey Harry Simpsons badge was taken up this morning and he was instructed to 1 report at meeting of the stewards of the Canadian 1 Racing Association, which will be held at Blue Bonnets on Wednesday, next. Simpson will be asked to explain the ride he gave Tropaeolum at Hamilton.
