LAURELS CAPITAL RACING FLITTERGOLD DEFEATS CHICLET BY A NOSE IN A HARD FOUGHT FINISH. Brave Cunarder a Victor in His First Race Since the Hawthorne Meeting Jockey Robinson Now j Heads the Jockey list Horses for Kenilworth. 1 Baltimore, MiL, October 11. The mile allowance ; race, which was offered as a feature by Secretary , Joseph McLennan at Laurel this afternoon, fur- , nished a splendid contest in which G. A. Mullers : Flittcrgold beat Chiclet by a nose for first money. ; The race was an interesting one from the start and all of the seven starters were prominent at , pome stage of the running. Both Flittcrgold and Chiclet suffered from interference in the early running and both came from behind. Flittcrgold was the better ridden of the pair, which was responsible for his victory. Chiclet was unfortunate in being messed about until he was straightened out for the final drive. When once clear, he responded resolutely to his riders call and at the finish was gradually wearing Flittcrgold down. The latter just managed to last long enough and it was a tight fit between the two at the finish. Brave Cunarder, making his first appearance since the Hawthorne meeting at Chicago, beat a big band of platers in the fifth race. lie was ridden by Tommy MeTaggart, came from behind and, squeezing through next to the rail, got up in the final strides to beat Estimable by a nose. Owner Bedwell was forced to stand a boost of 00 to retain him. The bidders were Sam Louis and W. Shea. This was T. McTaggarts second winning mount of the afternoon. By winning two races yesterday, jockey F. Rob-inson became the leader among American jockeys for the vear. His further successes today gave him a still greater margin over John MeTaggart, whom he displaced from the leadership yesterday. Count Bakmeteff, the Russian ambassador, was a visitor at Laurel for the first time this fall. The ambassador arrived from his summer home in Newport yesterday. A carload of horses will leave for Windsor tomorrow to be on hand for the opening of the Kenilworth meeting, which is scheduled to begin on Saturday. The consignment will include the stables of J. F. Sweeney, A. Parreto and W. E. Stor-lnont. Emil Herz is gathering a band of mares with the intention of mating them with his stallion Short Crass next spring, lie already has Ida Claire and ky and will purchase several others before the close of the racing season in Maryland. Ida Claire is now at the J. S. Barbee farm near Lexington, hort Grass, bv the way. worked a mile and an eighth this morning in 1:53 as part of his preparation for the Washington Handicap, to be run at Laurel Saturday. The stable of E. F. Whitney arrived from Filling Rock this morning, and It. Pickett came from Richmond, Va., with his string, which includes among others Dr. R. L. Swarenger and Danville. II. J. Kennedy got in with Oakhurst and two other horses belonging to Capt. P. M. Walker. While being schooled this morning the jumper. Venture, owned by William Garth, fell and injured herself so severely that she was destroyed. Yodeliug developed a fever after being worked this morning and was excused from starting in the seventh race. Messrs. Carter and Maloney, of Charleston, S. C, were arrivals this morning. They have leased Palmetto Park, near Charleston, and have already booked the following owners to winter their stables at that point: E. It. Bradley, A. K. Macombcr, Edward Trotter and II. Waterson. Judge Behrens, of Charleston, was also a visitor this afternoon. Edward Cole, who will act as presiding judge at the Kenilworth Park meeting at Windsor, will leave for Detroit tomorrow night. Joseph McLennan lias been complimented for the splendid programs he has furnished at Laurel this fall. Most of the fields have been large and well matched. Ilnndfull, winner of the second race, was advanced 00 over his entered price. II. G. Bed-well and Emil Hers were responsible for the bidding. J. W.
