HODGE UNDER BIG WEIGHT TAKES THE FEATURE LATONIA RACE IN A LONG DRIVE WITH COLONEL VENNIE. Alfadir Noses Beauty Shop Out in the Last Stride Vague Wins in a Canter for tho Wickliffo Stable Sir Wcllons No Longer a Maiden. Cincinnati, O.. October 11. W. J. Weber and Co.s Hodge took up 127 pounds at Latonia this afternoon and accounted for the Cincinnati Club Handicap at one mile and a sixteenth, after a hard effort to shake off Colonel Vennie. Tiie pair fought it out stubbornly from the start and there was never more than a lengths difference between them. Hodge ultimatley won by a halt length. Hanovia finished third, with Water Witch, which seems to have lost all her good form of early spring, a distant trailer. Excellent racing conditions again featured the sport and accounted for the customary big patronage. Speculation was also of a lively character, the victory of seven favorites yesterday having given the public additional confidence. The racing was spirited and most of the finshes close and exciting. The best finish came in the fifth race, a mile and seventy yards affair, contested by a mediocre band. It resulted in a nose victory for Alfadir over the favorite, Beauty Shop. Because of O. Gentrys indifferent ride on Alfadir in a previous race, the stewards recommended to owner Kirby that he put up a more skilful jockey and his selection of Andrcss was a happy one, for the rider was solely responsible for Alfadirs success. Triad, trained by J. S. Hawkins, was a starter in the race and she absolutely refused to move away from the barrier with the others. As a result of her action the stewards issued an order barring her further entry here. The Wickliffe Stables Vague, a first-time starter in these parts, made a show of the good youngsters that started in the third race, and won as her rider pleased from Sunflash and Latonia. W. F. Schulte, took his first purse in months when Sir Wellons emerged from the maiden class in the opening dash. The Jim Gaffney colt showed much speed and won from Seminole King. The latter was best, but in addition to showing greenness suffered from interference and closed a great gap in the last quarter. Brown Velvet furnished an upst in the second race, which she won at a long price. Anthonys Lass was an intended good thing for the race, but any chance she might have went glimmering when she was forced to race wide all the way. The consistent Sleetii again added a bracket to his long list when he scored in the sixth race from Solid Rock and Jack Reeves. Manager Hachmeister has set Wednesday. October 25, as ladies day, on which occasion ladies attended by escorts will be admitted free to the La-tonkl track. The feature for the afternoons racing will be the Queen City Handicap, at one mile, for two-year-olds. Garrett D. Wilson came over from Lexington this afternoon to witness the racing and is also said to have conferred with John Hachmeister as to date arrangements for next year. James P. Ross came over from Lexington to witness the performance of Uncle Hart in the seventh race. J. I. Smith, who has charge of Meditation and Mission Bell for S. H. Hewitt, will ship those horses to Lexington next Saturday and retire them for the winter. Jockey Mack Garner returned this morning from his home in Iowa and will resume riding at once. Secretary J. 15. Campbell announced the weights this afternoon for the Fort Thomas Handicap, to be run next Saturday. Harry Kelly is given the top weight of 130 pounds, but it is unlikely that he will go to the post. There are sixty-seven youngsters entered for the race, including the best in these parts, and it should bring out a splendid field and furnish a fine contest. Gus Muller, who ws extensively interested in the racing at Jacksonville, was among this afternoons visitors. J. Umensetter, who intends shipping his horses . to Juarez for the racing there next winter, will only campaign a small string, having retired eight of his horses recently. Starter Morrissey suspended jockeys F. Murphy and J. Callahan for three days each for disobedience at tho post. Work-outs over a fast track today were: Al M. Dick Five-eighths in 1:04.
