KILMERS HIGH BRED STALLION MAGIC. Among the many fashionably bred horses brought to this country from abroad in recent years, none lias better credentials for prospective successful stud service that Willis S. Kilmers Magic, now safely installed in his new home at Mr. Kilmers stock farm near Binghampton, New York. Magic was foaled in 1907 and was bred by the late Douglas Baird. Magic raced in the "orange, chocolate sleeves" of II. E. Beddington, for whom he won as a three -year-old the Goodwood Cup, two and a half miles, carrying 100 pounds, and defeating Bayardo, which was then a four-year-old and carried 136 pounds. Bayardo was at 1 to 20 in the betting and it was 20 to 1 against Magic. The overthrow of Bayardo created a sensation, but, while quite unexpected by the general public, the success of Magic was confidently anticipated by his owner and trainer, who did not believe- that Bayardo could concede their colt so much weight. Magic, displaying the utmost gameness. won by a neck. The same year Magic was a close second, beaten only a head, for the Wood Ditton Stakes, one mile, at Newmarket, won by Rock Lane, a sou of Rock Sand. Magic was also second that year to 1 Charlemont for the Gatwick Stakes, one mile and a half, at Gatwick, beaten a length. Magic is by Martagon Sesame, she by St. Simon i Maize, she by Hampton Palmflower, by The Palmer. Magics sire, Martagon, was a brother-in-blood to Ormonde, being by Bend Or Tiger Lily, she by Macaroni Polly Agnes, by The Cure. Martagons turf victories included the Ascot Vase and the Goodwood Cup, and he sired a host of winners, including Wool winder St. Leger, Musa, Minlagon, Wuffy, Champ de Mars, Mazagan, Jaquemart, Buckwheat, etc. Buckwheat, a brother to Magic, won the Brighton Cup, Prince Eward Handicap and Duke of York Stakes. Magics third dam, Palmflower, was one of the greatest broodmares of all time. Her produce included St. Florian, sire of Aril Patrick; Musa, winner of the Oaks and dam of Mirska, which also won the Oaks; Siphonia, dam of Symington, a successful English sire; Santa Maura, Simylla, Santa Palraa, etc. This is also the immediate family of Martinet, sire of Gainer, for Martinet is by Martagon Silene, she by St. Simon Palmflower. Magic obviously represents the best English blood on both sides of his pedigree, and he should be a great acquisition to the American thoroughbred industry.
