LAUREL TRACK SLOWED BY SHOWERS. Anita Outstays Celto in tho Principal Race John Whalen to Train tho Wickliffc Stable. Baltimore, Md., October 13. II. G. Bedwclls Anita showed a return of the form she displayed as a two-year-old, when she won todays feature race at Laurel, a handicap for fillies and mares of all ages at three-quarters. Anita carried 120 pounds, came from behind and beat Celto by a head after a long and hard stretch drive. Celto set a fast pace, considering track conditions, and hung on resolutely when challenged. Just before the horses went to the post for the first race showers fell and they continued on and off during the remainder of the afternoon. Not enough rain fell to affect the going much, but it was a bit dead and this was responsible for several withdrawals. Benevolent made a show of his opponents in the fifth race, a dash of one mile, in which lie beat Itoadmaster by a half-dozen lengths. Wise Man showed a disappointing performance in this race. W. Gerhart has sold Gloaming to Walter Shannon and the latter turned the horse over to Max Ilirsch, who will train him for his new owner. An important announcement was made during the afternoon which concerned John Whalen and Messrs. Corrigan and McKhmey. A deal was recently closed by these gentlemen with Whalen to train their big string next year. Whalen will leave for Latonia next week with Boots and will take charge of the horses at the conclusion of that meeting. The stable will be wintered at the Churchill Downs track. Whalen formerly trained for August Belmont and during the present season he has trained that good horse Boots and others with marked success. Emil Ilcrz bought Orperth and Success by the bidding-tip process after they had won today. B. Matheney purchased from G. A. Miller this morning the plater Jem. He will be shipped with the other horses iu this stable- to Cuba. The jumpers belonging to Major C. W. Otwell and A. J. Devereaux that took part in the meeting at Piping Rock, arrived at Laurel this morning. Several other strings of jumpers arrived and there should be no shortage of steeplechase material for the rest of the meeting. J. R. Thornbys useful fily Airginia W. has been fired and blistered. No attempt will be made to race her until next spring. Ed Coles place iu the judges stand was filled today by Jospeh McLennan. Judge Cole left for Windsor last night, to be on hand for the opening of the Kenilworth Park meeting. The management at Bowie has kept in line with the improvements made on other tracks in Maryland. Ten new stands for ticket sellers and ten new windows for cashiers have been added to the pari-mutuel plant. A new entrance has been built and cement walks laid from the car platforms to the stand. The grandstand has also been repainted. William Garth, who returned from Kentucky yesterday, reports that he purchased from J. E. Madden the unbeaten two-year-old Nebraska. He also obtained options on a number of yearlings and may close a deal for several of them shortly. Edgar Murphy, Andrew Miller and II. K. Knapp were arrivals from New York this morning. J. O. Talbott has purchased from Harry Payne Whitney ten horses, three of which are yearlings. James Rowe acted for Mr. Whitney in the transaction. Two of the older horse ar" Stilly Night an-1 and a two-year-old by Macdouald II. Paradise. Gainer and Hubbub, the property of the Greentree Stable, will be sent to New Orleans with the Talbott string. Mrs. J. E. Davis jumper Rusila arrived from Long Island this morning. M.
