CURRENT NOTES OF THE TURF. S. M. Henderson claimed Miss Kruter, when she last raced at Latonia, for ,050. T. H. McCreery has purchased for A. J. Davis the three-year-old chestnut gelding, No News, and will convert him into a jumper for the races next year. King Simon, also from tho Davis string, has "been retired for the year owing to an accident in his last start. Auckland, N. Z., trainers complained they had ditliculty in getting jockeys to ride work at Ellers-lie, and the matter received the attention of the district committee. The outcome was the following circular, signed by the secretary, Mr. J. F. Hnrtlaud: "I am instructed by the district committee to advise you that any jockey failing to attend regularly at the tracks to ride work may have his license withdrawn by the committee." In the course of a case in the Auckland. N: Z., police court recently, in which a bookmaker was lined, it was stated that the constable who had made the bets had managed to secure three wins out of four bets. This led the magistrate to re-, mark that the constable "must have known something." As a matter of fact, the Auckland Herald states, the constable was qute ignorant of any of the horses, and as he was supplied with government money to make the bets, the winnings have to go into the state treasury. The secretary of the Western District Racing Association lias received an application from a Forbes woman for a license as a bookmakers clerk. In Sydney some years ago a woman clerk lignred at our race meetings for a time, and a few months back the shortage of males owing to the war caused the employment of women as totalisa-tor clerks at a couple of New Zealand fixtures. They were satisfactory, too, one advantage with them being that they were not greatly interested in what won. Sydney Referee.
