CLARISSIMUS A CHAMPION STAKES WINNER. The Newmarket Second October meeting was replete with interesting racing and of some outstanding features of the opening day. "Augur" said in London Sporting Life: "Judging by the number of people who came to Newmarket by the early trains yesterday morning, we are in for a big attendance on Cesarewitc.h day. So far the weather has been anything but inviting, the atmosphere being raw and damp, but this is not an uncommon experience during the month of October, The first days program, in which there was not a single selling race, worked out well indeed, though naturally much disappointment was expressed when it became known that Pommern would shirk his engagement in the Champion Stakes, in which event it had been definitely announced that he would make his final appearance in public prior to retiring to the stud at Maiden Erleglu. "In the circumstances the contest was reduced to a three-cornered one, in which the stable companions, Volta and Silver Tag, and the Two Thousand Guineas winner, Clarissimus, were concerned. W. Waugh made no secret of his confidence in the Kingsclere three-year-old, which, in spite of being at a disadvantage at the weights, started a fractionally better favorite than Silver Tag. This proved to be a correct index to the. result, Clarissimus easily beating the filly, which once more found a mile and a quarter too far for her, and at the same time paying a handsome tribute to the merits of his September Stakes conqueror. Hurry On. "The opening race, the Kirtling Plate, fell to .Bayodce, whose owner, Mr. II. E. Mprriss, created a surprise by giving a tall figure for the youngster as a foal at public auction. The reappearance of Grand Fleet in the Clearwell Stakes was watched with great interest, and it was gratifying that the colt was so nearly himself again as to prove capable of giving away weight all round to everything except The Tabard gelding, which is obviously a far smarter youngster than his only previous performance suggested. There was a capital race for the Alingtou Plate, in which the three placed horses drew right away from the remainder of the runners. Clurehaven provided a warm favorite in Elsdou. which was one of the trio referred to, and Avon by a head from Gadshill. The third youngster, The Destroyer, is a son of The Tetrarachs sire, and, like the celebrity named, is a gray, plentifully marked with white spots "The Suffolk Nursery, for which Pickering started his whole fleet of three candidates, produced another fine finish, in which the game Chaucer gelding Poignant just had the better of the improving Planet, and thereby compensated Mr. llultou for Silver Tags failure in the preceding race. Dark Sapphire, which had run second to Caiinobie at eleven pounds here in June, looked like? winning the Newmarket Oaks for a long way, but proved to be no match in the end for the Manton filly, Lady Minta."
