CURRENT NOTES OF THE TURF. The horses were at the post only one minute in the third race at Pimlico, November 8, and again in the third race on November 9, instead of six minutes, as previously printed. The owners of the Jamaica race course, looking forward to another successful season, are preparing to make extensive improvements on the plant. Dodge and Morrison, the architects, have drawn plans for repairs to the grandstand and an enlarging of the clubhouse which will cost 3,000. There will be an addition of 300 box seats, and the portion of the grandstand roof, which was blown away in a storm three years ago, will be replaced before another season of racing. In his day an eminent turfman and breeder, E. De Mestre, Sr., died recently in Australia. In the sixties and seventies he won no fewer than four races for the Melbourne Cup. The inaugural race in 1SC1 he won with Archer, an appropriately-named horse by William Tell, which scored again in the following year. Mr. De Mestres third success was by aid of Tim Whiffler by New Warrior in 1867, and his last with Calamia in 1878. The Victoria Racing Club Derby he won with Robiu Hood in 1875 and Navigator in 1882, the last-named also winning the Victoria Racing Club St. Leger, Australian Jockey Club Derby and Australian Cup.
