AMERICAN-BRED MARE WINS IN INDIA. Racing in India is going on well and I read in the Bombay Chronicle of September 24 that there was a big exodus from that city for the postponed second day of the Poona Second Meeting, four race specials being run, in addition to ordinary morning trains. In the result the enclosures were packed. The chief weight for age race, the Aga Shamshudin Plate, brought out a number of horses that were well known here before being sent to India, included in the field being Radiant. Criton. Silver Balm, Jove, Vanity Box, Fire Finch and Primrose Morn. Victory went to Primrose Morn, on which AV. Huxley rode a well-judged race. Radiant ran well, but he had 132 pounds to carry, and was trying to give Id pounds to the winner, a seven-year-old gelding by Mocanna, which, as a three-year-old when owned by Mr. Frogley, defeated Castleton, Cigar, Borrow and other speedy horses for the Queensberry Handicap at Newmarket Houghton. Among the runners for the Stewards Plate one and one-half miles was Philanthropist, now owned by the Maharajah of Gwalior, and he was much fancied, but he was beaten a short head and a head in a tremendous finish by the topweight. Santa Barbara 133 pounds and North 131 pounds, with Mr. Galstauus Shining Way 98 pounds fourth at an interval of a neck. The winner was ridden in artistic style by Trenoweth. j I Santa Barbara presumably is the American-bred filly of that name, by Ornus out of Santa Catalina, which three years ago, as a three-year-old, was sold at Haydock Park for 35 guineas. A. Temple-man, Hardy and Pullin were other successful Eng- lisli jockeys. At the Calcutta Monsoon races on the same day Hayhoe won two welter races in sue- cession on Sumurun for Mr. Cunningham and on J Guess for Mr. Donetil. "Vigilant" in London j Sportsman.
