GLOOMY CLOSE AT PIMLICO FOG OBSCURES VIEW OF ANYTHING BUT THE RACES FINISHES, t Rain Makes the Going: Heavy Stake Race of the Day Easily Won by J. J. Lillis Bowie Meeting Begins Today. Baltimore, Md., November 13. The races on the closing day of the meeting at Pimlico were run in a heavy fog that hung over the course and hid the horses from view until near the finish. The closing day of what is considered the best fall meeting ever held by the Maryland Jockey Club, brought a large gathering to the hilltop track, despite the disagreeable weather. The going was deep as the result of heavy rain, and horses that race well in muddy going had a decided advantage. Eight races were run, one in the morning at eleven oclock, and seven in the afternoon. There was no betting on the race run this morning, although it had a purse of 00. It was won by Salon. The limlico Serial Handicap No. 3 went to the Marrone Stables, .7. .7. Lillis which led from the start and was never headed. Hauberk, an added starter, was second and Chiclet third. .7. P. Sweeney has purchased Ahara from C. It. Fleischmaun and J. Byer bought Onwa from Charles Raynor. E. Kathman, who is gathering a stable to race at Oriental Park in Cuba, has taken over the fast sprinter Iniperator, which won a number of races at Havana last year. S. Louis lias sold to J. W. Iledrick the plater Brave Cunarder. W. llayward will leave tomorrow with the W. F. Fresgrave horses for Salisbury, Md., where they will go into winter quarters. 5. It. Bryson disposed of the two-year-old Virginia by Ormoudalc Agnes Virgina to Barney Schreiber this morning. She is a half-sister to Jacoba and will be mated with Jack Atkin. There was a large gathering of horsemen at the course this morning to witness the running of the extra race. Salon won the purse and immediately afterwards lie was disposed of to G. It. Bryson, who will take him to Cuba with the remainder of liis string. Jockey A. Schuttinger has given first call on his services for the Bowie meeting to G. It. Bryson. Schuttinger has decided to rest nest winter and will .probably remain at Laurel until next spring. Kmil Herz announced that the victory of Short Grass in the Bowie Stakes at limlico on Saturday marked his final appearance on the turf. Mr. Herz has decided to send the horse from here to Kentucky, and locate him at a farm close to Lexington. During his career on the turf Short Grass won at all sorts of distances. He was honest and game, and never wore blinkers. Mr. Herz has decided to limit the number of mares to liim for the first season. Algernon Daingerfield. secretary of the Jockey Club, was a visitor at limlico this afternoon. He will remain over until the opening of the Bowie meeting tomorrow. Dan McTaggart lias taken over jockey J. McTaggart book and will look after his engagements at Bowie. M. Shecdy, who had looked after both of the McTaggart boys engagements, left for Tijuana last week. He was accompanied to the coast by T. McTaggart. William Garth has decided to send his yearlings into winter quartern and race them at Bowie next spring. At the conclusion of that meeting he plans to dispose of every horse he owns and confine his operations to training for Ital Iarr and others. Mr. Garth will ship forty horses from Benning to his farm at Charlottesville, Va., where liis entire band will be wintered. W. P. Burch has nine grand-looking yearlings at Benning. Mr. Burch has a half dozen older horses in his string. He will dispose of all but Ultimatum aud Crank before going into winter quarters. Seymour Veiller, who, for ninny years was employed as manager of the betting rings in various tracks in the west and who, at one time, raced Christophine, Bermudiau, Mazuik and others, died in San Diego, Cal., yesterday. He leaves a wife, sister and brother. The remains will be intered in San Francisco.
