This is the mare Marcette, by Marco La Croisette, which is believed to be safely in foal to St. Yictrix, the latter the sire of Lux. Mr. S. 1$. Joel has four of his Polymelus horses engaged in the Spring Handicap at Johannesburg, including Polystone, which lias not yet been seen out on a South African course. The Australian High Commissioner gives the information that at Caulfield, oil October 17, the Debutant Stakes was won by Remmon, with Fran-zac second and Thrice third. Betting odds were 5 to 2 against Remmon. The result of the Caul-field Stakes was: Lavendo, first; Kilboy, second; Cyklon, third. Betting odds were 3 to 1 against Lavendo. Rayodee won his first race October 17, when squeezing home somewhat unwillingly for the Kirtling Plate. As a foal the son of Bayardo and Cheshire Cat made the record price of 3,100 guineas, his owner being Mr. H. E. Morriss, who has business interests in China. Mr. H. E. Morriss has two brothers who have been at the front almost from the outbreak of the war. J. Butters, the Kremlin House, Newmarket, trainer, celebrated his sixty-ninth birthday October 24. There are few more active men of his age than Butters, who can be seen riding on the heath every morning superintending the work of his horses, and frequently enough he gets up and take part in a trial. Nothing would please him better than to ride a match with anyone about his own age. Auckland New Zealand Racing Clubs report for the year ending June 30 is satisfactory. The total amount of stakes allotted amounted to 12,-750 and exceeds that of the previous season by ,500. The club lias presented to various patriotic funds the sum of 5,820, which, added to similar donations last season, gives a total of 5,100 since the war began. The different French racing societies were permitted by Presidential decree of August IS, 1914, to dispose of their reserves in favor of certain charitable and benevolent institutions necessitated by the war, with a condition that they should retain in hand at least sufficient funds to carry on racing for a year. The permission for the different trials and competitions wrested from the Minister of Agriculture by the different racing societies ended at Mont de Marsan at the end of the last month. The great majority of the holders of ante-post books on the Cesarewitch were more or less heavy losers over the success of Sanctum, which had been backed from 1,000 to 00 down to 10 to 1 before the publication of the acceptances, and immediately afterwards became a good favorite at 7 to 1. Subsequently he never looked back, steadily improving his position and starting at 9 to 4 against. Cornsheaf, too, was a well-backed filly, each way, at from 25 to 1 down to 7 to 1, although she weakened to 9 to 1 at the start. Sanctum, it is understood, figures in many . doubles, although in some books he is lighter than Prawle Point would have been. London Sportsman.
