4*- j. STRIKING STATISTICS SHOWING THE INCREASING PROSPERITY OF AMERICAN RACING LAST YEAR I 1 The racing campaign of 1910 showed the expected statistical gains over 1915 in every department. There was an increase of money won on the North American tracks of 6880,484, of 1M racing days and 1.244 more races run. These are substantial figures and in a striking way show how great was the measure of returning prosperity to American racing. In many ways there are recognizable indications that a further healthy gain is to be recorded at the end of 1917. although it may not measure up to the increase of 1910 over IMS. The fact that several newly constructed tracks will, for the first time, give stake races of good value, while older organizations are to raise the values of their offerings, will have an important bearing in this direction. Altogether the present turf outlook is decidedly of the cheerful order. The total sum distributed in stake races and purses from racing over the recognized tracks of North America was ,842,471. On* has to go back to UN to lad a greater total paid to owners of horses in racing. A complete story of the annual returns from racing since and including 1900 make the following interesting showing: Racing No. of Racing No. of Year. Distribution. Days. Races. Year. Distribution. From this track alone the valuable gain of 5300.150 to owners was realized. Over in Canada well appointed mile tracks were constructed in the vicinity of Windsor and named Kenil-worth Park and Devonshire Park. Two meetings of the usual seven days were given at each track, the result being a return from entirely new sources of 8128,800. Racing at Hot Springs, Arkansas, was resumed and a successful spring meeting gave owners an unexpected 542. SOS as the return of twenty-one days of racing. An experimental meeting of thirteen days at the Hawthorne track. Chicago, gave a further new distribution of 557.850. The three new tracks and two new revivals thus enumerated contributed 5523.808 of the year increase over 1915 and will even figure more importantly in the returns of 1917. The fallowing table presents in detail the number of days of each meeting, number of races at each meeting, totals distributed by meetings, winning owners and horses, winning first and second choices and outsiders, winners at odds-on, favorites beaten at odds-on and the percentage of favorites which won at each meeting: o= oc erg.
