MID-WEEK RACING AT JUAREZ. Waybehind Belies His Name Leaving His Opponents Behind in Fifth Race — Gossip of the Track. ■ Paso, Tex.. January SB. -Pacing was resumed today at Juarez, with clear weather and a fast track. The opening race went to Peter Crimm. second choice in the betting, which, after being held in reserve in the early running, caugln anil paaaed the tiring pacemaker, Oldsmobile, in the -treteh and won de, isively. The eight-year old elding Waybehind. a first-time starter, belled hi- name, when he sprinted to the front in the fifth race and outdistanced hi; opponents throughout. Mali won the fourth race, in which were engaged a good baud of sprinters. After Lone Stars victory in the sixth race the gelding was bid up from l to 8831 by Kay Bpence, but was retained by I. A. Stevens. Jake Marklein. the Cincinnati turfman, was an arrival today from Tijuana. He will remain a lew days, then proceed to New Orleans. Walter II. learce and jockey T. Henry will leave lure Saturday night for New Orleans. Kay Bpence, v. ho has the largest stable racing at Juarez, has announced his intention of disposing of most of the number at auction on February 3. It is his intention to weed out the poorer ones and return to Kentucky with only the better grade. Tin se latter will include Hocnir. Coinmauretta and four two-year-olds. Among the number are several that Sponce took out of selling races. Included an- Lady Worthington. Some Bench, Certain Point. Waremore. Yaca. Rubicon II.. Bob-link, Panella. Pelle C. Prince Kugene. Smiling Mag. Helen Thompson. Black lack, Pigtodo, Clumsy Kate. Knglish Lady and kutluiid Arms. Plarney. for which W. J. Weber paid 81,888 last winter, and which has since been trained by Kay Bpence, was sold last week in the Juarez paddock for .$."." . Great things had been expected from Blarney, but he developed what is known as a "plugged" artery in his right hind leg. and which paralyzed that member when the horse got warmed up in a race. Spence Somewhat Disappointed. Spence has not garnered the purses this winter like he did last winter, and he is anxious to reduce his stable and return to Louisville to take up the horses he has had turned out at Murphys Farm. These include Hodge. Moneymaker. YVilhite. Red Cloud. High Gear, Mi Lady Ann. Fight Fan and a couple of two-year-olds. He expects to have Juarez February 28, and may ship soiik horses to the Oaklawn track in Hot Springs, to fit them for the Kentucky season. The quartet of two-year-olds that Spence has at Juarez have been named for the piscatorial tribe, and are icspcctively. Black Pass. Red Salmon. Perch and Red Snapper. The two former are by Dick YYclles. while the two latter are by Ivan the Terrible. Red Salmon anil Plack Pass are regarded aj the best of the four. Jockey Oeorge Penschoten. who came here with the intention of riding has abandoned the Idea, owing to his Inability to get down to weight, and at present he is acting as a valet. Frank Weir has returned to Wade McLcmore the three -year-old Lytle. which Weir had leased for twelve months. In his last start Lytle pulled up lame and it was feared that he had struck himself seriously, but an examination disclosed the fact that the injury was only of a trifling character. The gelding is back in charge of Tom Munford and will be seen in a race shortly. Jockey C. Hunt was suspended for five days by the stewards tor rough riding in the fifth race Tuesday. Leduc. chestnut gelding. S. by Ort YYells — Cognomen, behnegiag to B. Mere field, broke his leg hi the opening race at Juarez Tuesday and was destroyed.
