SHOULD APPLY FOR LICENSE AT ONCE. Jockeys and Trainers Will Avert Difficulty by Filing the Proper Papers on Time. New York. January 2.V — Jockeys and trainers will profit if they make applications for licenses at an early date, so that their documents can be looked over nnd passed upon by the license committee of the Jockey Club before the regular racing season begins in Maryland. Heretofore many have deferred until the last moment and then had to work under a temporary license. According to the resolution just passed by the stewards of the Jockey Club, good and sufficient cause will have to lie shown why applications for a license was net made in due time, and if this is not forthcoming, the stewards of the meeting may refuse to grant temporary papers. Stewards of a meeting at times do not know what complaints there are against trainers and riders in the files of the Jockey Club, and they have been known to grant licenses that were immediately rescinded as soon as the licensing committee gets to work. It is to avoid such complica tions that the resolution has recently been adopted. All trainers and riders who intend to operate on eastern tracks should apply for a license at least a month before the season opens. By doing so. they would avoid all formalities which have to be gone through the first day of a meeting and the day prior to an opening. There have been cases where entries have been refused from trainers larking a license, and jockeys have not been permitted to ride owing to temporary papers having been refused. Hence it will be seen how necessary it is to file early applications for privileges. Charles Peak, one of the old school riders, contemplates a trio to Buenos Aires to follow his vocation. "The weights are higher in South America than here," says Peak, "and 1 think I could do well in a country where I would not have to reduce so much." Peak is not alone a good rider, but boars an excellent reputation both for manners and ability.
