3 i I i I , , I , , ; ■ MACOMBER HORSES COMING TO LOUISVILLE. Big String of Fifty -One Racers to Reach Churchill Downs Early in April. By Chas. A. Bergin. Louisville, Ky., March 13. — The extensive racing , establishment of A. K. Macomber, in charge of , trainer Walter B. Jennings, now in training at j ialmetto Park, Charleston. S. .. is due to reach , Churchill Downs in the first week in April, accord- j ing to advices just received at the offices of the , New Louisville Jockey Club from Mr. Jennings, j In his communication Mr. .It linings asks that fifty- , five stalls be reserved, and he states that he will , I. ring the entire stable in training, comprising , fifty-one head. Included in the consignment will j be the seven Macomber Derby eligibles. including the high -priced North Star 111., for which Mr. Ma- comber is reported to have paid 1917.sh0,000 in England -last fall. Trainer Thomas Welsh is said to have , offered ?-50. »HX for the Knglish colt, on behalf of , Joseph K. Widcner of Philadelphia, just prior to | his sale to Mr. Mai umber. j Trainer Jennings says he is xvell pleased with , the manner in which the horses, especially the , Derby colts, have been training all winter, and . declares that he never trained a battel looking a . band. He is giving each of the seven aspirants . for Derby honors the same preparation for the rich . race, and believes they will all bo able to stand up under the hard grind. He is well ph-ased. Instates, with the apiioarance of North Star III.. which has grown lusty and rugged since being placed in Jennings care last fall. He says he will iie glad to get back to the Downs, for which he cherishes many pleasant memories. It was at this , track that Mr. Jennings trained Star Hawk for a month prior to last years Derby. There being at present no barns sufficiently large to accommodate a racing establishment of the siz • of Mr. Mai -umbers, it has been found necessary to erect a new structure, that, when completed, will connect two of the present barns and practically turn three buildings into one, thus placing all of the horses under one roof, and making the work el training them so much easier. Numerically Greatest Stable. As at present constituted the Macomber stable is undoubtedly the largest and one of the most costly in training. Its arrival at Churchill Downs will place it at the forefront in numerical strength on the local track, that position at present being occupied by the WicklifTe stable, numliering forty -six head, with the establishment of J. E. Madden second with thirty-six head. Local turfmen are awaiting the arrival of the Macomber stable with unusual interest, the reason therefor being their desire to get a glimpse of North Star III., and the other Derby eligibles in the stable and compare them with those already here. Hut little is known here concerning the sou of Sunstar. the inly line obtainable being his races in Kngland last year. The fact that he was considered one of the best two-year-olds in Fug land last year and that his present owner thought fit to give sueh a large price for him. impresses local turf men with the idea that North Star III. must, indeed, be a great colt and the most likely one of the imported eligibles to triumph over Un-American brae*. The close by coming of the Macomber stable has aroused renewed discussion regarding the merits oi the most talked about aspirants for the Derby, and those of the stable in the care of trainer Jennings in particular. Regarding the chances of Mr. Macomber. the opinion is generally expressed that if he is to win this years Derby, one of his importations of last fall must do the trick. These are North Star III.. War Star, Walnut Hall and Le Chevesiie. with the first-named standing out most prominently. The two year olds shown by Mr. Macomber in this country last year, including such ones as Star Cazer. Star Master and Hollister. are splendid looking animals and on occasions the] showed speed, but they were lacking when arrayed against horses of the best class. Chicago Mans Horses in Training. T. L. Fierce has in training for F. J. Kelley of Chicago a stable of seven horses at the Downs, including Peter Jay. a Derby eligible. Four of the others are two year-olds, the only other member of the establishment being Stephen It., a four-vear-ohl winner of several races last year. Peter Jay is training soundly and. if nothing goes amiss, will carry the Chicago owners colors in the Derby on tin- afternoon of May 12. Peter Jay is a chestnut gelding by Toddington At telle. He won one race as a two year old and is con- sidered a colt of fair quality. The two year olds in the stable ale: ltest Beau, eh, ■. by Bearaea Beaa -Fraaelaea. Ichi I.an. br. f, by Trap Rock Linda Stone. Fza Nameiiy. eh. f. by Trap Rock Fizgig. Irish Be**, Ch. C, by Bourbon Beau — Lauretta Stolworthy. Mr. Fierce also has a chestnut filly by Transvaal Mary Day, which is a sister to Blackie Daw. This is the most highly regarded of the band. It was announced that Mr. Kelley had ret iied treat the breeding business. Allelic, his chief marc, has been sold to John Carr.
